The Green River Wolves Soccer team traveled to Jackson last Thursday to play a conference game against last year's State Champs, the Broncs. Going into the game, Green River knew it would be a challenge.
The Wolves started out strong in the first half of the game, making one goal and keeping the Broncs at zero. Green River slipped in the second half and allowed four goals from Jackson. The Wolves ended the game in a loss, with a final score of 1-4.
Leading the Wolves were Braxton Doak with the single goal made, and a tremendous 14 saves from Goalkeeper Jake Demaret. There were also single shots from Irie Kuball and Gavin Mares during the game.
Despite the loss, Green River played a great defensive game and Head Coach Josh Webb is very proud of how well the team played and how well they have adjusted to playing in 4A. He said they just had a tough time finding the back of the net for the last half of the game.
"We had a phenomenal game against Jackson," said Coach Webb. "We actually had the game of our life and that's the best soccer I've seen them play."
On Friday, the Wolves turned around and hosted a conference game against the Rock Springs Tigers. Green River was preparing for an intense game against the Tigers and rivalry games are usually vigorous.
During the first half of the game, Rock Springs scored two goals and Green River was unable to get on the board, despite the efforts from Doak, Kuball and Izyk Arellano. The second half of the game was tough, with both teams playing strong defense and not allowing either team to score. Green River walked off the field losing the game with a final score of 0-2.
Demaret was injured during the game when his hand got stepped on, breaking his wrist. Kolby Eckhardt and Colter Davis filled in as goalkeeper for the rest of the game.
Coach Webb said he has other goalkeepers that can step up, but Demaret will be missed as he is "a force on the net" and he will be out for three months.
Coach Webb feels the boys came out on the field flat but bounced back and had a huge defensive game against Rock Springs. They were able to keep the Tigers from scoring the last half of the game, and it was an intense game.
The Wolves will have another busy weekend, hosting two conference games against Natrona County and Kelly Walsh. Green River will take on the Natrona County Mustangs on Friday at 5 p.m. On Saturday, Green River will face the Kelly Walsh Trojans at 12 p.m.
Coach Webb feels Green River matches up well against both Natrona County and Kelly Walsh, and he is looking forward to the upcoming challenges.
"We're changing a little bit of our attack and play, so we're finding the net a little bit more for the upcoming games," he added.
