Lady Wolves take the lead in Southwest Quadrant

Last week the Green River Lady Wolves Softball team had some thrilling games at home to kick off quadrant play. They played three games in total, one against the Cheyenne South Bison and two against the Laramie Plainsmen.

Their first game was against the Bison on Friday. The game started off close with both teams playing very well, and by the end of the second inning the score was tied up at 2-2. Green River began to heat up after this, and with some great hitting in the next few innings they managed to take the lead 12-4 by the end of the fifth inning. Cheyenne South tried to force their way back into the game, but the Lady Wolves were able to hold out, and came away with a 12-9 victory after seven innings.

Head Coach Mark Hyde said he was pleased with how well the team hit the ball during this game. He mentioned the team had some fielding errors which allowed the game to be close, but he was happy the team was able to secure the win regardless.

Chacee Shiner and Kodi Allred led the charge for Green River's outstanding batting during this game. Both girls got hits in all four of their at bats. They were followed by Emma Rieck who got three hits, and Haidyn Terry who got two hits. Shiner and Allred also led the team in scoring, with both getting three runs. Izzy Kelley was just behind them with two runs, and Ally White, Cassie Kelley, Molly Thompson and Rieck all managed to get one run. White, Terry, and Allred all managed to hit a triple during the game as well.

Terry pitched all seven innings for the Lady Wolves, and had a great game on the mound. She allowed only eight hits throughout the game, and managed to get nine strikeouts. Coach Hyde said that she pitched one of her best games, and added that nine strikeouts was a personal best for her.

Green River's next game was against Laramie on Saturday. The game started out hot, with both teams scoring four runs in the first inning. But it quickly turned into a defensive battle, with neither team being able to take the lead all the way until the seventh and final inning. At the top of the seventh, Laramie finally managed to cross home plate again, and took the lead 5-4. The Lady Wolves only had one chance to get back into this game in the bottom of the seventh.

Coach Hyde summed up the thrilling conclusion to this game.

"When Laramie took the lead in the top of the seventh, I reminded the girls that we were right where we wanted to be in the heart of our lineup," he said. "Sure enough, we loaded the bases, and Emma Rieck came through with a game-winning single. I could tell she was nervous, but she put the ball in play and our base runners did exactly what they needed to do. Molly Thompson, courtesy running, made a great slide around the catcher to score the winning run."

This amazing comeback at the end of the game allowed Green River to sneak away with a narrow 6-5 win over Laramie.

Allred led the team in batting again, securing a hit in three of her four at bats. Danielle Maag and Izzy Kelley both managed to get two hits. Rieck also got two hits, including the game-winning single at the end of the game. Thompson scored two runs for the team as a courtesy runner for Terry, and Shiner, Allred, Izzy Kelley and White all scored one run.

Terry pitched the entire game for Green River once more, and allowed only six hits across all seven innings, while getting one strikeout.

The Lady Wolves played Laramie in a second game on Saturday, and this game started out close just like the previous one. At the end of the second inning, Green River was down 5-6. The team couldn't hold on this time however, and gave up 17 runs during the third inning, leading to a 10-23 loss.

Despite losing the game, the team still had some great performances while batting. Izzy Kelley, Shiner, Allred, and Terry all got two hits. Terry also batted in four runs, while Allred batted in three runs. Rieck pitched this game for the team, and gave up 15 hits while getting two strikeouts.

Importantly for Green River's season, only the first game against Laramie counts for their overall quadrant record, meaning they currently lead their quadrant 2-0 after wins against Laramie and Cheyenne South. They will have another quadrant game against Rock Springs next week.

This week the Lady Wolves will be at home again. These will be their final home games of the 2025 season. First they will face off against the Torrington Trailblazers in two games on Friday, with the first game starting at 3:30 p.m. Next up will be the Wheatland Bulldogs in two more games, with the first starting at 11:30 a.m. They will also host the Rock Springs Lady Tigers next Tuesday for two games, and the first game will start at 3:30 p.m.
