Tunnel cleanup wraps up

Cleanup work at the I-80 westbound tunnel is wrapping up, clearing the way for the tunnel to be evaluated for repairs.

The Wyoming Department of Transportation shared an update on the progress of cleanup operations in the tunnel last week. Following the accident and fire that occurred in the tunnel on February 14, WYDOT and contract crews from Clean Harbors Environmental Services were working on cleanup operations for over a week.

"Major debris has been removed and crews are currently pressure washing and cleaning the tunnel walls and ceiling," WYDOT explained in a press release last Thursday. "Crews will then be removing the damaged lighting infrastructure in the tunnel."

WYDOT expected the cleanup to conclude by the end of the week.

"Once the work is completed, WYDOT engineers and consultants will be on hand to evaluate the damage and begin plans for repairs," the press release continued.

WYDOT has previously shared the goal of having repairs underway by the summer and having traffic moving through the tunnel again before the winter season starts.

Drivers going through the head-to-head traffic in the eastbound tunnel are reminded to stay alert, drive cautiously, and be aware of roadside workers and vehicles working on the westbound tunnel.
