Last week the Green River Lady Wolves Softball team traveled to Cheyenne for their first games of the season. They played four games in total, and went 2-2 for the weekend.
Their first game was against the Sheridan Broncs on Friday. The Lady Wolves started out strong this game, and managed to score three runs during the top of the first inning. They held this lead until the bottom of the third, where Sheridan was able to mount a comeback to tie the game up at 3-3. Green River responded well with two more runs during the fourth and final inning, giving them a 5-3 victory.
Haidyn Terry, Ally White, Danielle Maag, Jocelyn Shantz and Emma Rieck all scored one run for the Lady Wolves. Terry pitched all four innings, and managed to get four strikeouts throughout the game while only allowing four hits from the Broncs. Terry also managed to steal two bases during the game.
Green River's next game was also on Friday, this time against the Campbell County Camels. The team struggled a bit in this game, and were down 0-5 by the end of the second inning. They managed to get on the board with two runs during the third, but couldn't hold on and ended up losing the game 2-11 after four innings.
The two runs for the Lady Wolves were scored by Terry and Kodi Allred. Rieck was pitching for Green River for this game, and she earned two strikeouts while allowing eight hits.
The Lady Wolves had two more games on Saturday, with the first being against the Thunder Basin Bolts. The game started off close, with the first inning ending 0-0. The Bolts pulled away during the second inning however, scoring 12 runs while Green River managed to score two. The Lady Wolves couldn't recover from this deficit, and lost the game 3-20 after three innings.
Shantz, Allred, and Chacee Shiner each scored a run for Green River. Rieck was pitching once again, allowing 17 hits by Thunder Basin.
Green River's final game of the weekend was against the Worland Warriors. They recovered well after some tough losses, and managed to get up by 8-2 by the end of the second inning. They carried this momentum throughout the rest of the game, and came away with a 16-6 win after five innings.
White crossed the home plate the most for the Lady Wolves, scoring a total of three runs. She was followed by Izzy Kelley, Cassie Kelley, Allred, Terry and Rieck, who all scored two runs. Shiner, Shantz, and Molly Thompson also scored a run during the game. Izzy Kelley and Terry had the most hits for the team, with both girls getting three hits out of four at bats. The Lady Wolves also managed to steal an impressive nine bases throughout the game, with Shiner and Rieck having the most stolen bases at two each. Terry pitched two innings for Green River, getting three strikeouts and only allowing two hits. The other three innings were pitched by Hadlee Mortimer, who got one strikeout and allowed four hits.
Head Coach Mark Hyde thinks the girls played well considering they haven't had a lot of chances to practice outside yet.
"A lot of days we couldn't get outside and we didn't have everything implemented we needed to," he said.
Even with limited outside practices, Green River had a strong showing and came home with two wins under their belt. The team is now aware of their strengths and also what they need to do to improve their skills.
This week the Lady Wolves will have their first home games of the season. On Friday they will take on the Cheyenne East Thunderbirds in two games, and on Saturday they will host the Cheyenne Central Indians for two more games. The Friday games will start at 3:30 p.m. while the Saturday games start at 11:30 a.m.
