The Green River Wolves Boys Soccer team has been gearing up for the upcoming season with practices that began on March 10. There are 46 players who showed up to play this year, and Head Coach Josh Webb said they have been scrimmaging a lot to see where the boys will be placed because they have enough players for two JV teams.
"We have a lot of kids," he said. "We've been doing a lot of scrimmage so we can find out where we will place them, and make sure we get them in the right spot."
Coach Webb said he is very pleased with all the potential that he has already seen during practices.
During the offseason, some players played for the Avengers while others played for Joe Vasco's team to get touches on the ball. To stay engaged and in shape, other athletes played different sports during the year.
The Wolves have a few returning senior players this year, including Jaxon Morris, Aidan Falcon, Guy Grace, Jakob Nielsen, Jorge Torres, Riley Miller and Lalo Ramirez. Some other returning stand-out players are Maddux Hintz, Braxton Doak, Irie Kuball, Aiden Morris and Dominick Littlefield. The rest of the team is made up of a lot of sophomores and freshmen. The senior and junior players play an important role for a young team on the field. They will be looked upon for guidance, especially from the freshman athletes. Heading into this season, overall the Wolves will be a very exciting, young team for the staff to coach.
This year will be Coach Webb's third year coaching the boys. He has brought new experience and knowledge to the team along with returning assistant coaches. Assistant coaches are Tina Rodriguez, Toby Trumble and Greg Doak. Coach Webb is very thankful for the excellent coaching that his assistants bring to the sport.
Last year, the Wolves ended their season on a high note with 14 wins and four losses. Green River finished in second place at the 3A State Championships after taking down Buffalo and Torrington and then losing to Cody. This year will look different for Green River as they start the season as a 4A team and face some tougher teams.
"We are in 4A now," stated Coach Webb. "It's going to be very competitive and we have some heavy hitters like Jackson, Kelly Walsh and Natrona, so we are going to have to bring our 'A' game. We're going to get ready for them and I think this team can beat them as long as they slow down and play strong."
The Wolves are starting their season hosting two games this weekend. Green River faces the Evanston Red Devils tomorrow at 5 p.m at the Wolves Stadium. On Saturday, Green River will play the Riverton Wolverines at 1 p.m.
