Green River High School's Outdoor Track and Field kicked off the first spring sports season practice this past Monday, March 10. The first meet of the season will be today against the Kelly Walsh Quad at Kelly Walsh High School in Casper.
After the first week of practice, the Wolves Girls and Boys Track and Field team has 58 members, with a few more possible coming out this week, according to Head Track Coach Dan Hansen. The breakdown for the team by class includes 24 freshmen, 15 sophomores, six juniors and 13 seniors, which bodes well for the future, but fields a young team this season. Hansen feels that the freshmen out this year are a good group of athletes that likely will "hang in there" and compete well this season.
Hansen and his fellow coaches are looking forward to the season. He notes that they took eight kids to State last year and they are hoping and planning on more going this year.
The Wolves will be competing in the 4A West along with Evanston, Star Valley, Natrona, Kelly Walsh, Riverton, Jackson and Rock Springs.
The current schedule for the season calls for nine in-state multi-team invitational meets one smaller meet. The season will conclude with Regionals mid-May at Evanston High School and the State Meet scheduled for May 22 in Casper.
Green River will host their own Invitational Meet on Wednesday, April 9, beginning at 9 a.m.
Several seniors will be leading the team this year and playing in their final athletic performances for the Wolves. For the girls, the seniors are Isabelle Murdock, Lily Murdock and Meeka Iwen in the distance running events; Lillian Allison in the throws; Mikayla Dockter in sprints and pole vault; Evan Murray in sprints; and Bree Van Etten in middle distance. For the boys, the seniors are Chaz Helmandollar, Jared Comerer and Dallan Rosene and sprints and jumps; Trace Erdman and Keegan Gailey in sprints, jumps and pole vault; and Jordan Andrew in the distance runs.
