The Green River High School Girls Soccer team is ready to storm the field. After starting practice last week, the Lady Wolves are kicking off their season with two big home games this weekend. The action starts Friday at 3 p.m. as the Lady Wolves take on the Evanston Red Devils in a high-stakes season opener. Then, they'll be right back at it on Saturday at 11 a.m. against Riverton, looking to defend their home turf. With a #4 state ranking in 3A and a move to the fiercely competitive 4A West Conference, the Lady Wolves have something to prove-and they're ready for the challenge.
This year's team is stacked with talent, bringing a powerful combination of offensive firepower, defensive resilience, and veteran leadership. Leading the charge for Green River is Isabel Vasco, a name that has become synonymous with excellence on the field. Vasco is not only Wyoming's top goal scorer-she is also ranked seventh in the nation after an extraordinary 2023 season in which she amassed 70 goals and 152 points. While Vasco's scoring prowess is sure to be a major asset, she is far from the Lady Wolves' only weapon. Brynlee Cordova, who finished last season ranked 17th in the state with 22 points, will be another key contributor to Green River's offensive strategy. While the offense is ready to light up the scoreboard, Green River's defense is prepared to lock things down. Goalkeepers Alex Sotos and Mikayla Flores bring confidence between the posts, with Sotos boasting a 1.928 goals-against average last season. If opposing teams want to score, they'll have to work for it.
Perhaps the biggest X-factor this season will be the leadership and experience of the Wolves' six seniors. Olivia Morris, Claira Kuball, Hannah Davis, Lily Harris, Samantha Alatorre and Brooklyn Morrell are ready to set the tone, bring the intensity, and push this team to new heights. For these seniors, every game is another chance to leave a legacy, and they'll be giving it everything they've got.
But home-field advantage doesn't come from just the players-it comes from the home crowd. The Wolves have spent months preparing for this moment, but a passionate, energetic crowd can provide the extra motivation they need to defend their home turf.
