Last week the Green River Lady Wolves Basketball team headed over to Rock Springs to play their final game of the regular season. The game was supposed to be held at the Rock Springs High School but ended up being moved to Western Wyoming Community College. Head Coach Clinton Landon thought this change in venue worked out well, and said a lot of people came out to support both teams.
"The crowd was packed. It was loud in there, so it was a great atmosphere," he stated.
The game was a bit back-and-forth at the beginning, but Green River started to pull away into a lead by the end of the first quarter. They continued to expand on this lead throughout the game, and ended up winning the game 65-37.
Coach Landon said he was very happy with how the team played as a whole during this game. He mentioned that the girls did amazing on offense, with four players getting into the double digits for scoring. They also managed to get more than 40 rebounds in total.
The Lady Wolves had many players who performed well during this game, with great contributions from all five of their starters. Isabel Vasco led the team in scoring with 15 points, followed closely by Nicole Wilson, Sydnie Eastman and Sophia Arnold who all scored 13 points each. Addison Demaret managed to score six points, and also led the team in assists with seven total. The team's top rebounder was Wilson with 11 rebounds, followed by Eastman and Arnold who got nine and eight rebounds respectively. Vasco and Eastman were tied for most steals with five each.
Coach Landon believes that these big contributions from so many different players show how much depth the team has. He mentioned how Vasco and Wilson both got into foul trouble towards the end of the game, but the team was able to step up and continue to score well regardless. Having the whole team put forth a great effort and come up with a big win against a rival team in Rock Springs is exactly what the Lady Wolves needed as they prepare for Regionals.
Green River will be playing in the 4A West Conference Regionals this week. The tournament is being held in Rock Springs, with games starting today and continuing on through Saturday. Green River's win over Rock Springs last week meant that they ended in a tie with Natrona for the second seed in the 4A Northwest Conference quadrant. The tie was broken by a coin toss. Luckily Green River won the toss, giving them the second seed. This means that their first round matchup will be against the third seed of the Southwest quad, the Riverton Wolverines. The game starts at 3:30 p.m. today. The winner of this game will go on to face either Star Valley or Rock Springs in the semifinals tomorrow.
