Last week the Green River Lady Wolves Basketball team traveled to Casper to battle the Kelly Walsh Trojans and the Natrona Fillies. These were two of Green River's final games of the regular season, and both games ended up being very close.
Green River started the weekend with their game against Kelly Walsh on Friday. The Lady Wolves struggled to make some of their early shots, which allowed the Trojans to pull out to an early lead. At one point the Trojans were up by 11 points, but Green River was able to fight their way back into the game and brought the lead all the way down to only two points. The Trojans managed to hold on at the end though, and Green River ended up losing the game 47-51.
Although the team narrowly lost this game, Head Coach Clinton Landon said he was very proud of the team's resolve. It was an emotional weekend for the team, and they went into the games being down two of their key players. Given the circumstances, Coach Landon believed the team responded well and still managed to put up a great fight in this game.
"They wanted to play for their teammates, and I know they were giving everything that they got," he stated.
Leading the team in scoring for this game was Isabel Vasco, who scored 18 points along with six rebounds and seven steals. Sophia Arnold also played well, leading the team in rebounds with 10 total. Another player who had a great game was Brookelyn Phillips, who was starting for the first time as a freshman. She scored nine points and also had three assists.
On Saturday, the Lady Wolves had their second game of the weekend against Natrona. Coach Landon said the game was very back and forth early, but Green River was again having some problems with shooting. The team played well on defense and had some good chances to score, but just wasn't able to get the ball in the hoop when they needed to. Natrona was a bit more accurate with their shots, resulting in the Lady Wolves coming away with a 48-60 defeat.
The leading scorer this time for the Lady Wolves was Addison Demaret, who scored an impressive 22 points along with five rebounds and four blocked shots. Vasco also had another good game as she managed to get 12 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and seven steals. Phillips and Arnold performed well once more in this game, with Phillips getting nine points and three assists, while Arnold led the team in rebounds again with eight total.
This week, Green River only has one game, which will be their last game of the regular season. They will be headed to Rock Springs tomorrow to take on the Lady Tigers at 5:30 p.m. This is an important game for Green River's final standings in their conference quadrant. If they manage to win against Rock Springs, and Kelly Walsh also beats Natrona this week, then Green River would still have a chance to get the second seed in their quad. So the team has a great opportunity with this final game to bounce back after the tough losses last week and gain some momentum going into Regionals.
