Last week the Green River Lady Wolves Basketball team had their final home games of their 2025 regular season. They hosted both the Evanston Red Devils and the Riverton Wolverines, and played phenomenally both games.
Green River's first game was against Evanston on Thursday. They had a good start to the game and were able to get out to an early lead. The team continued to play well, and never allowed Evanston to get back into the game, ending the game with a 55-32 victory. Head Coach Clinton Landon said he was pleased with how the team played during this game, especially on the defensive side of the ball. He wanted to emphasize playing better defense this week, and the girls certainly delivered.
He stated that he "challenged the team to have single digit quarters for them," and the Lady Wolves were able to rise to the challenge, holding Evanston to less than 10 points during three of the four quarters.
Green River had many girls who were able to step up as leaders during this game. Isabel Vasco led the team in scoring with 16 points. She also had nine assists and five steals. Not far behind were Nicole Wilson and Sophia Arnold; Wilson scored 14 points and got seven rebounds, while Arnold scored 13 points and also got seven rebounds. Addison Demaret had a good game as well, scoring nine points along with four rebounds. The team also played great as a whole, making 17 out of 24 attempted two-point shots, giving them an impressive 71% accuracy.
The Lady Wolves were up against Riverton next, and they had an even more outstanding start to this game. They played what was possibly their best first quarter of the whole season, ending the quarter with a 24-2 lead. They held onto this early lead throughout the whole game, never allowing the Wolverines to catch up, and wound up winning their second game of the week 55-30. The team didn't forget about Coach Landon's challenge during this game, and they were once again able to play fantastic defense and keep Riverton to less than 10 points during three out of four quarters.
Vasco, Arnold, and Wilson all played amazingly once more during this game. Vasco scored 20 points along with five steals, while Arnold scored eight points and also led the team in rebounds with 10 total. Wilson contributed well in every aspect of the game, getting 12 points, seven assists, nine rebounds, four steals and three blocks.
Coach Landon said he feels the team is "doing good stuff on the defensive side of the ball," and that they are "trending in the right direction." The team couldn't have picked a better time to start building momentum like this, as they are coming up on two important conference games this week. Green River will be headed to Casper to take on the Natrona Fillies and the Kelly Walsh Trojans. They'll play Kelly Walsh at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, followed by Natrona at 1 p.m. on Saturday. With only two weeks left of the regular season, these games will have big implications for Green River's conference seeding going into Regionals.
The Lady Wolves are currently ranked second in the 4A West Conference North Quadrant with a quadrant record of 2-1. Kelly Walsh is the only quadrant team to beat them, and leads the quad with a 3-0 record. So if Green River is able to beat them they will then tie the records up, and be leading the quad along with Kelly Walsh. Being the first seed instead of the second seed could secure them a better first round matchup during Regionals, so hopefully the Lady Wolves can continue their hot streak with two more wins this weekend.
