The Green River High School Boys Basketball team experienced a week of highs and lows, falling to Evanston on Thursday before bouncing back with a thrilling Senior Night victory over Riverton on Saturday. The packed gym, electric student section, and heartfelt celebration of the team's seniors made for an unforgettable evening-one capped off by a hard-fought 56-47 win.
Thursday's matchup against Evanston was a battle from the start, but the Wolves struggled to find their offensive rhythm against a tough opponent. Despite Hunter Lake's standout 15-point performance and his four assists guiding the offense, Evanston pulled away to secure a 65-44 win. AJ Keelin fought hard on the boards, leading the team with three offensive rebounds, while Dylan Archibald and Keelin each contributed two defensive rebounds. But the Wolves couldn't close the gap, and the loss set the stage for a must-win game on Saturday.
And on Senior Night, the Wolves delivered.
With emotions running high and a roaring home crowd behind them, Green River took the court against Riverton, determined to send their seniors out on a high note. Senior leaders Hunter Lake, AJ Keelin, and Dawson Peterson were honored before the game for their dedication and impact on the program, and their teammates were ready to rally behind them.
"The atmosphere on Senior Night was special," said Head Coach Laurie Ivie. "We had a packed house and a large student section, creating an unforgettable energy in the gym. What an awesome memory for our seniors. The win, along with the support from the crowd, made the night even more meaningful. It was the perfect way to celebrate their hard work and dedication to the program."
Green River fed off the energy and played one of their most complete games of the season. Dax Taylor led the scoring effort with 15 points, while Keelin continued his dominance on the glass, grabbing three offensive rebounds. Lake showcased his all-around game, pulling in six defensive rebounds and dishing out four assists to help guide the Wolves' offense to victory. The win wasn't just about the scoreboard-it was about the moment. It was a night to celebrate the players who had poured their hearts into the program, to recognize the commitment of Lake, Keelin, and Peterson, and to come together as a team in front of a community that has supported them every step of the way.
With Senior Night in the books, Green River now turns its attention to a challenging road trip to Casper, where they will face Natrona on Friday and Kelly Walsh on Saturday. With momentum from their latest victory and the lessons learned from tough battles, the Wolves are ready to take on whatever comes next.
If Saturday proved anything, it's that this team has heart-and they aren't done fighting yet.
