Our View: Thank you to the helpers

There’s a famous quote from Mr. Rogers that talks about “looking for the helpers” when tragedies happen. This week’s newspaper is full of its share of tragedy, but we’re thankful that it’s also full of stories of “the helpers.”

Last Friday, our community faced a horrific tragedy. This week’s front page is filled with the devastating details of the accident at the I-80 tunnels. From those who lost their lives to those whose lives will be forever changed by injury and trauma to the brave and dedicated first responders who will continue to feel the impact of this event, our hearts go out to all those who are hurting right now. The tragedy is real, and is heavy.

Amidst the pain, however, we are thankful that we can take Mr. Rogers’ advice, and we can look around and find the helpers. While there are always naysayers and complainers looking to find fault and shift blame, their voices are drowned out by the voices of compassion and the resounding impact of kind actions. This week’s People page is filled with the stories of those who wanted to find ways to help, from hamburgers and pizza to bouquets of flowers to fundraisers. We want to add to those expressing gratitude for the help and support of the community through this event.

Tragedies are always difficult, and their impact cannot be downplayed. But it is the power of the helpers that pulls a community together to find a way through and forward.
