Lady Wolves dominate the court against Jackson

The Green River Lady Wolves Basketball team had two exciting games last week. They traveled to face the Jackson Broncs, followed by another away game versus the Star Valley Braves.

First, Green River played against Jackson on Thursday. Green River started the game extremely well, pulling out to an early lead of 26-6 by the end of the first quarter. They slowed down a bit in the second quarter, but were able to come out strong during the second half to continue adding to their lead. Green River scored an amazing 39 points during the second half, which propelled them into a 73-40 victory over Jackson. The leading scorer for Green River was Isabel Vasco, who scored 20 points and also managed to get eight steals. Nicole Wilson played a great game as well, contributing to the team in every aspect of the game. She secured 16 points, 12 rebounds, seven steals, and four blocks throughout the game. Another player who scored well was Mikayla Flores, who made seven points during the game.

Head Coach Clinton Landon commended the team for how well they played in the first quarter. They have had some struggles in the past during the early moments of the game, so he was happy to see them fixing some of their issues and taking a commanding lead early on in the game. Coach Landon also mentioned that he was very happy with how the team played as a whole, noting that nearly every player who came in during the game was able to score some points, including some girls from the bench.

"That's a nice thing, when you can get up like that and play everybody on your bench and they all can contribute," he said.

Green River then played a thrilling game against Star Valley on Saturday. The match was very close throughout its entirety, and either team could have came away with the victory. Green River started out well and got an early lead, but Star Valley was able to hang around and make a second half rally to take the lead away. Late in the game, Star Valley was looking to improve their lead, but Green River made some important plays just when they needed to. Addison Demaret got a big block followed by the rebound, and then Star Valley fouled Vasco. She was able to make her free throws to give the lead back to Green River, and from there the Lady Wolves were just barely able to hold on and come away with a 45-43 victory. Wilson and Vasco led the charge once more for the Lady Wolves during this game. Wilson scored 17 points, along with eight rebounds and six steals, while Vasco scored 12 points and got five rebounds and six steals. Sophia Arnold was another leader for the team, earning six points and seven rebounds during the game.

Coach Landon said he was impressed with how well the girls were shooting from the free throw line, not only in this game but in both games last week. Green River made 19 of their 24 free throws against Jackson, and 19 of 28 free throws against Star Valley. He emphasized how important these points were, especially in the close game against Star Valley. Even though the girls were missing some of their shots, these crucial points from free throws allowed them to come away with the win.

This week, Green River has their final two home games of the season. They will host the Evanston Red Devils today at 6 p.m. Then on Saturday, they will host the Riverton Wolverines at 2 p.m. Coach Landon mentioned how the team was starting to play better defense last week, and how he is going to continue to stress the importance of defense for this week's games.

"We're athletic enough, we can do a lot of different stuff, but we have to have all five committed to playing defense hard," he stated.
