Speech and Debate gets wins in Jackson

The Green River High School Speech and Debate Team showcased their talent and hard work at the recent tournament in Jackson, securing a first-place finish in the 3A division and earning numerous individual accolades.

The team displayed excellence across multiple categories, with several students taking top honors. Leading the way was Spencer Morrell, who took first place in Humor, while Savery English secured second in Oratory. In Poetry, Leo Evans placed fifth, and Haley Messerly took seventh.

The Extemporaneous Speaking category saw an impressive showing, with Silas Chetterbock earning first place, followed by James Leffers in third, MaKynzee Bagshaw in fifth, and Bekalyn Swett in sixth.

Informative Speaking was another strong event for the team, with Madison Korkow claiming first place, Olivia Wilkinson in third, and Georgia Morrell in fourth. In Dramatic Interpretation, Lillynee Janota placed second, and Leo Evans took fifth.

The Duo category featured standout performances from Spencer and Georgia Morrell, who placed fifth, and Eva Hegewald and Stevie Winer, who took sixth. In Program Oral Interpretation (POI), Emma Johnson took first, followed by Bekalyn Swett in second and Leo Evans in third.

The Impromptu category was led by MaKynzee Bagshaw, who claimed firtst place, with James Leffers finishing fifth. The Public Forum (PF) Debate event saw a dominant sweep, with the teams of Hegewald/Janota and Bagshaw/Johnson tying for first, while Swett/English secured third place. In Extemporaneous Debate, Emma Johnson emerged victorious in first place, and Sydney Bowen placed fifth in Original Spoken Word Poetry (OSWP).

"This team has worked incredibly hard, and their success at this tournament is a testament to their dedication and skill," said Head Coach Jericho Morrell. "We are proud of each competitor and excited to see what they accomplish next."
