Lady Wolves secure landslide victory over Lady Tigers

The Green River Lady Wolves Basketball team faced off at home against the Rock Springs Lady Tigers last Friday. This was their first of two games against the Lady Tigers this season, and Green River played a fantastic game to attain another conference win.

Green River started the game out strong, and pulled off to an early lead right away in the first quarter. Rock Springs managed to fight back however, and nearly managed to tie the game back up, but the Lady Wolves responded well and had a strong run at the end of the second quarter to get a lead before the first half ended. They managed to keep this pace during the second half, and were able to secure the win with a final score of 65-31.

Head Coach Clinton Landon said he was very happy with how the girls played, and emphasized how they did extremely well on the defensive side of the ball during the second half. They held the Lady Tigers to only 13 points during the second half, and this impressive defense allowed them to find their rhythm on offense as well. Coach Landon also mentioned how he is excited to see where the team is going, and that he thought this game showcased how well they can really play.

"It was fun to see them doing well, having fun and celebrating each other," he stated. Another thing he was happy with was that the team had big contributions off the bench. "A couple kids went in and guarded their best player, and I thought they did a great job," he said.

The team was outstanding when it came to controlling the ball. They only turned the ball over 10 times during the game, while they forced Rock Springs to turn the ball over 24 times.

Leading the charge for the Lady Wolves was Isabel Vasco, who scored an incredible 34 points during the game. Not only did she score more points than the entire opposing team, she also scored enough to earn the number-one spot in the state for most points scored by an individual player in a single game this season. Vasco also led the team in steals, stealing the ball away nine times throughout the game.

Another top performer for the team was Nicole Wilson, who led the team in rebounds. She got 10 rebounds during the game, along with 14 points and four assists.

As of Monday, Green River is ranked first in the state for average rebounds per game. They average 35.9 rebounds every game, which is three rebounds higher than the second-place team. They are also ranked fourth in points per game, averaging just under 50 points.

The Lady Wolves also have a lot of players with impressive individual stats. Vasco is ranked first in the conference for points per game, scoring over 17 points on average. She is also ranked first in steals per game, and second in assists per game. Wilson is having a great season as well. She is currently ranked second in the conference for rebounds, steals and blocked shots. The first place spot in blocked shots is held by her teammate, Addison Demaret, who manages to get 2.9 blocks per game on average. Sophia Arnold also holds a couple top spots in the rankings. She is the second-most accurate shooter in the conference, making 49% of her shots this season. She is ranked third in rebounds per game as well.

This week, the Lady Wolves have two away games. First, they will head to Jackson later today to compete against the Jackson Broncs. The game will start at 6 p.m. Their next game will be against the Star Valley Braves. That game is on Saturday, and starts at 3:30 p.m. Coach Landon said that both these teams have been playing well lately, and are getting better each week. So the Lady Wolves need to be ready to play, but hopefully their decisive victory over the Lady Tigers can give them some momentum heading into these games.
