The Green River Wolves Swimming and Diving team dove into the Gillette Invitational this past weekend, facing tough competition, lingering illnesses, and a roster stretched thin. With Conference and State fast approaching, every race carried weight, and despite the challenges, the team delivered strong performances. The meet served as both a test of resilience and a preview of what's to come in the final stretch of the season.
Keegan Gailey delivered a dominant performance in the 1-meter Diving event, earning first place with an impressive score of 458.35, a performance that further cements him as one of the state's top divers. Tieler Ballard (16th, 263.10) and John Carson (22nd, 213.15) also put together solid dives, adding critical points to Green River's overall team score.
In the sprint events, Mitchell Horn proved once again that he's a force in the 50-yard Freestyle, touching the wall in 24.04 to secure a ninth-place finish in a highly competitive field. Andrew Neher wasn't far behind, finishing in 24.79 for 13th place. Depth in the event was on full display, with Logan Gray (25.83), Kaiden Dodson (26.44), AJ Veys (28.31), Tieler Ballard (30.84), Denim Quesada (35.13), and John Carson (36.68) all making their mark.
Aiden Neher delivered a standout swim in the 100-yard Butterfly, breaking the one-minute barrier with a time of 58.57 to place seventh, while Dallan Owens clocked a strong 1:01.14 to finish 12th. Both swims signal the potential for even faster times as the team begins to taper in preparation for the postseason.
In the longer events, Vance Lauriski-Adams showed his endurance in the 200-yard Freestyle, posting a time of 2:05.94 for 18th place. Murdoch Crowell also put up a solid effort, finishing in 2:19.77. Lauriski-Adams later returned for the grueling 500-yard Freestyle, placing 17th with a time of 5:52.32, while Dodson showed impressive stamina, finishing 27th in 6:12.42.
The relay teams delivered under pressure despite missing key athletes. The 200-yard Freestyle relay team of Horn, Andrew Neher, Gray, and Lauriski-Adams posted a strong time of 1:41.70, placing 13th, while the 400-yard Freestyle relay team of Horn, Aiden Neher, Andrew Neher, and Lauriski-Adams put together an impressive 3:43.08, finishing eighth. Both performances demonstrate the team's ability to step up when needed – a promising sign with conference and state right around the corner.
In the 100-yard Backstroke, Ashton Hafner (1:12.45) and Arden Lamb (1:12.66) finished back-to-back, while Kayden Brueckner (1:20.36) and Denim Quesada (1:34.43) rounded out the event. In the 100-yard Breaststroke, Andrew Neher led the Wolves with a time of 1:11.37, placing 15th. Landon Meese (1:21.06) and Murdoch Crowell (1:21.12) followed closely behind in a race that came down to the final stretch.
When the final points were tallied, Green River finished 10th with 167 points, just three points behind Riverton. Though not their highest team placement of the season, the meet served as a crucial stepping stone toward the championship phase.
As the team enters its taper-a training phase designed to reduce workload and sharpen speed-the Wolves are setting their sights on peak performances at Conference and State. With rest and fine-tuning, the team can expect times to drop and intensity to rise as Green River looks to make its mark in the final meets of the season.
