Lady Wolves mount impressive comeback against Natrona

The Green River Lady Wolves Basketball team had two home games last week. They faced two conference rivals, the Natrona Fillies and Kelly Walsh Trojans. Each game was hard fought by both teams, with each of them being decided by five points or less.

On Friday, Green River hosted the Fillies. Despite a slow first half, The Lady Wolves were able to come together as a team and score 31 points in the second half, which was just enough to tie the score and force the game into overtime. They managed to carry their momentum from the second half into overtime, and came out on top in the end with a 59-55 win over Natrona. Head Coach Clinton Landon said he was very happy with the girls' performance in this game, and was proud of them for being able to come together as a team and get the win, despite being down 17 points at one point during the game. He said that this win was a "really good game to show what we're capable of doing when we play together." He also mentioned how this game was a big milestone for the girls, because it showed them that sometimes the ball may not always go in the hoop, but if they work together they can find other ways to win.

The Lady Wolves' late game comeback was led by Isabel Vasco, who scored an amazing 26 points throughout the game. Many of these points came from the free-throw line, where she made 11 of her 14 shots. She also led the team in steals, managing to steal the ball away nine times during the game. On defense the team was led by Nicole Wilson and Addison Demaret. Wilson had 11 rebounds and five blocks, while Demaret had 10 rebounds and eight blocks.

On Saturday, Green River battled the Trojans in another close conference match. This game started out similarly, with the Lady Wolves struggling a bit in the first half. They once again tried to mount a comeback in what ended up being a very back-and-forth second half. However, Green River came up just short this time and lost the game 40-45. Coach Landon said the girls had some good chances to win, but just weren't able to land shots when they needed to. He stated that "We just weren't shooting real well. We ended up being one of 16 from three, which isn't like us."

Both Wilson and Vasco performed well for Green River once again during this game. Wilson scored 14 points and had six rebounds; while Vasco scored 10 points, along with four assists and four steals. Sophia Arnold also performed well this game, she led the team in rebounds with 11 total, while scoring nine points as well.

This week, the Lady Wolves only have one game. They'll be playing at home again, where they will face off against the only team in their conference quadrant that they haven't played yet this season, the Rock Springs Tigers. Coach Landon mentioned this week was a good opportunity for the team to recover from the loss last week against Kelly Walsh. They have a good chance to show what they are capable of against the Tigers, followed by a weekend off to relax and rest. The game will start at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
