Green River Wolves Boys Basketball battles hard in Casper matchups

The Green River Wolves Boys Basketball team hit the road over the weekend to face two Casper powerhouses, Natrona County and Kelly Walsh, in a pair of conference matchups. While the Wolves ultimately came up short in both games, the team showed flashes of brilliance and toughness that they'll look to build on as the season progresses.

On Friday night, Green River went toe-to-toe with Natrona County in a thrilling game that came down to the wire. With the Wolves leading by two in the final moments, the Mustangs hit a clutch three-pointer with just 9.6 seconds left to steal the win, 46-45. The Wolves played lockdown defense for four quarters and stayed composed in a tightly contested game. Adam Robertson led the way for Green River with 13 points and five rebounds, while Dawson Peterson and Dax Taylor each grabbed four defensive boards. Hunter Lake facilitated the offense with three assists, keeping the Wolves in the fight until the final buzzer.

"We worked hard and played great defense for four solid quarters," said Head Coach Laurie Ivie. "It was a tough loss, but the boys gave it everything they had. We're taking lessons from it and moving forward."

On Saturday, the Wolves faced off against Kelly Walsh but struggled to find their spark, falling 47-68. A sluggish start allowed Kelly Walsh to set the tone early, and Green River found themselves outpaced on both ends of the court. However, the Wolves rallied late, showing resilience in the fourth quarter behind a standout performance from Jake Demaret. The junior guard scored 12 of his 14 points in the final period, proving to be a bright spot in an otherwise challenging game. Demaret also grabbed four rebounds, while Dylan Archibald worked hard on the defensive end, pulling down five boards. Dawson Peterson and Hunter Lake once again led the team in assists, each dishing out three.

"We started the game flat, and we got outworked from start to finish," Coach Ivie admitted. "Our energy and effort didn't match our usual standards, but I know this group is capable of bouncing back. This weekend showed us areas we need to improve, and I know the boys are ready to put in the work."

Despite the outcomes, the Wolves' potential was evident. Friday's defensive battle demonstrated their ability to shut down high-powered offenses, while Saturday's late-game surge showed they can rally even when the chips are down.

The Wolves are now setting their sights on a crucial matchup against their cross-county rivals, Rock Springs, this Friday. With Regionals looming at the end of February, every game matters as Green River fine-tunes their strategy and builds momentum for the postseason. Fans can expect the Wolves to come out hungry, determined to get back in the win column and show they're ready to make some noise in the conference.

It's a long season, and the Wolves are still writing their story-Friday's rivalry game might just be the turning point they've been looking for.
