Lady Wolves Basketball team begins conference play

The Green River Lady Wolves Basketball team traveled to both Riverton and Evanston last week to begin their conference play. They had a solid start to their conference games, with both games being competitive matches.

On Thursday, Green River played the Riverton Wolverines. The girls started the game off a bit slow, but played an impressive third quarter to pull into the lead. They managed to hold this lead through the final quarter to end the game with a 51-40 victory. This second half rally was led by Nicole Wilson, who scored 15 of their 22 points in the third quarter. Wilson scored 18 points in total, and also had four steals throughout the game. Sophia Arnold had a great performance as well, scoring 13 points and leading the team in rebounds, with a total of 19 rebounds.

Head Coach Clinton Landon was also impressed with the performances of Natalie Tynsky and Brookelyn Phillips, two freshmen who were pulled up to the varsity team for this game. Tynsky managed to hit two back-to-back three-point shots during a crucial moment during the game. Coach Landon said these shots helped to give the team a little confidence, and that it is a "big deal to come in as a freshman and hit two big shots to give us a lead."

On Friday, Green River faced off against the Evanston Red Devils. This game was very back and forth, and either team could have come away with the victory. In the end, Green River barely lost with a final score of 37-41. Towards the end of the game the score was tied, and Coach Landon stated that "we just didn't make enough plays at the end to be on the winning side." This and too many turnovers were the main things he attributed the loss to. However, he also mentioned that Evanston is a tough place to get a win at, and that he was still happy with how the girls played and the fact that they had a chance to win at the end. Wilson was a standout player once again during this game, managing to score 17 points. Arnold and Wilson both led the team in rebounds, with each of them securing 10 rebounds. Addison Demaret also played well, scoring nine points and getting six rebounds.

This week, the Lady Wolves have two home games. Coach Landon is excited about these games, and thinks that having two home games will be a great way for the team to get back on track for conference. First, they will play the Natrona Fillies at 6 p.m. on Friday. Then, they will host the Kelly Walsh Trojans on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Currently, Green River is ranked first in the 4A Northwest Conference quadrant. Both Natrona and Kelly Walsh are in the same quadrant as Green River, meaning these upcoming games are very important for the Lady Wolves' season. The standings are as follows:

1. Green River 7-5

2. Natrona County 5-6

3. Kelly Walsh 1-10

4. Rock Springs 0-8
