A hometown hero was recently honored for his quick actions that helped save the life of his friend.
Skyler Hossele was presented with a Citizens Lifesaving Award from the Sweetwater County Sheriff's Office during the January 21 Sweetwater County Board of County Commissioners meeting.
"We firmly believe in honoring individuals who demonstrate extraordinary courage and selflessness in service to others," Sheriff John Grossnickle said during the presentation. "In keeping with this commitment, I am proud to formally recognize Skyler Hossele for his exceptional bravery and life-saving actions, which embody the highest ideals of community spirit and personal sacrifice."
Skyler and his friend and teammate Ethan Veesart were attending swimming practice at the Western Wyoming Community College swimming pool together on the evening of Wednesday, October 23, 2024, the Sheriff explained. As he was swimming, Hossele realized Veesart was experiencing a medical emergency in the lane ahead.
"Recognizing the severity of the situation, Skyler immediately sprang into action," Grossnickle continued. "He ensured Ethan's airway remained above water and promptly called out to nearby lifeguards for assistance."
The lifeguards and Hossele were able to remove Veesart from the pool. Hossele continued to help by retrieving Veesart's belongings, notifying Veesart's parents, and helping guide first responders to the facility to give medical care.
"Skyler's swift and selfless actions were instrumental in averting a potentially tragic outcome and exemplifying an extraordinary commitment to the wellbeing of others," the sheriff said.
Sheriff Grossnicke, supported by the county commissioners, presented Hossele with a plaque in order to express gratitude and admiration for his heroic efforts.
"It's heartbreaking to hear of an event like that taking place," Commission Chairman Keaton West said, adding, "It hurts a little worse when you're related to the individual."
West explained that Veesart is a member of his family, and said his five-year-old son looks up to Veesart as his bigger cousin. West pointed out that Veesart is still here because of Hossele's quick call to action. He also noted that Veesart is a senior in high school this year, and the incident caused some concern and uncertainty about his future. However, West said he's happy to understand that Veesart is already back in the pool, thanks to Hossele.
"You're a saint and a hometown hero," West told Hossele. "I think I can speak on behalf of the family that we're forever indebted and appreciative of your actions that day."
Along with other friends and family, Veesart was also present at the meeting.
"I am so grateful for Skyler, for what he did for me," Veesart said.
Veesart joined Hossele as the posed for photos with the award, after which the friends gave each other a big hug.
