The Lady Wolves Basketball team recently traveled to Cheyenne to compete in the James Johnson Winter Showcase tournament. Green River had a great weekend on the court, winning two of their three games.
On Thursday, Green River played the Southeast Cyclones. They had a slow start during the first half, scoring only 15 points, but came back strong in the second half, scoring 11 points in the third quarter and 15 points in the fourth quarter. This impressive second half performance allowed Green River to secure the win with a final score of 41-24. Head Coach Clinton Landon felt the girls weren't shooting as well as they have been, and attributed this to them being a bit rusty after coming back from Christmas break. He said the Cyclones came in with a good game plan, but Green River was able to adapt and do much better in the second half. Leading the Lady Wolves was Nicole Wilson, who scored 17 points, along with Isabel Vasco, who scored 12 points. Wilson also led the team with eight rebounds and five steals.
On Friday, Green River played the Cheyenne Central Indians. The Lady Wolves had another slow start this game, only managing to score eight points during the first half. Despite an impressive fourth quarter where they managed to score 19 points, they were unable to come back from their early deficit, and lost 32-50. Vasco led the team once more with 15 points, and Wilson had five steals and three blocks. Wilson and Sophia Arnold were standouts on defense, getting nine rebounds each, followed by Addison Demaret and Sydnie Eastman who each had seven rebounds.
Coach Landon said that it was "our mistakes that cost us that game." He felt the Lady Wolves had too many turnovers and allowed the Indians to get too many offensive rebounds, which led to them having too many opportunities to score.
On Saturday, Green River played their final game of the weekend against the Thunder Basin Bolts. They started this game off stronger, scoring 19 points during the first half. Their second half went even better, as they were able to score 32 points to narrowly win the game 51-48. Vasco had another outstanding performance, scoring 29 points, followed by Wilson who scored 11 points. Wilson also led the team in defense, with nine rebounds and three steals.
Coach Landon was excited for this victory, saying that he "couldn't tell you the last time they beat Thunder Basin." He thinks they have only beaten them once or twice in his 10 years of coaching. He was also very happy with Vasco's performance, stating that "she just kept driving to the basket and they couldn't stop her." He feels this win over the Bolts will give them a lot of momentum for their upcoming conference games against Riverton and Evanston.
As of Monday, Green River is ranked fourth in the state for points scored per game, managing to score over 49 points on average, and second in the state for shooting percentage, making 38.6% of their attempted shots. They are also leading the state in rebounds, averaging over 35 rebounds per game. The team has many athletes who are doing well in individual rankings as well. Vasco is ranked first in the conference for points per game and assists per game, averaging 15.2 points and 3.9 assists. Eastman is also doing well in assists per game - she is ranked third in the conference. Green River holds both of the top spots in average steals per game, with Wilson averaging 3.5 and Vasco 3.3. Wilson holds another top spot in rebounds per game, she is currently ranked second in the conference. Blocked shots is another category the Lady Wolves have excelled at, with Demaret being ranked first in the conference with 2.6 blocks per game, followed by Wilson in second with an average of 1.9 blocks.
