Green River Recreation Center Supervisor Katie Blood recently recognized three employees and several community members who acted quickly to help save the life of a patron. During the January 7 Green River City Council meeting, Blood took time to publicly thank thank those who took action when a 75-year-old patron experienced a medical emergency that resulted in the loss of consciousness while in the deep end of the pool.
Blood said that Leisure Program Instructor Renae Price and Pool Staff Member Jordan Anderson simultaneously recognized the emergency and took immediate action. Blood noted that the swift response happened within seconds, exceeding the average recognition time of three minutes. Blood also recognized front desk Staff Member Malea Gomez for her role in coordinating emergency services and facility response. Gomez helped to ensure that advanced life support was available within four minutes of the incident. Blood noted that the four-minute mark is well under the critical 10-minute threshold recommended by aquatic safety standards.
Blood stated that according to the American Red Cross, the survival rate for water related medical emergencies drops by 10% for every one minute of delayed response.
"Our team's quick action and seamless coordination insured zero delay in emergency care," she said.
Blood also acknowledged community members Bonnie Shoup, Ivan Banks and Parker White who aided staff during the incident.
Blood explained how the quality of training makes a difference.
"These staff members turned what could have been a tragedy into a testament of our commitment to public safety and professional excellence," she said. "Their actions reflect the caliber of training and dedication we strive for, for all City employees."
