The Green River Wolves Boys Basketball team stepped onto the court this past weekend with their sights set on testing their resolve, facing a gauntlet of elite opponents, including Sheridan, top-ranked Laramie, and the formidable Arvada West. Though the results weren't in their favor, the Wolves walked away with heads held high and valuable lessons for the season ahead.
"It was an incredible opportunity to measure ourselves against some of the best teams around," said Head Coach Laurie Ivie. "We didn't get the outcomes we wanted, but the experience is going to make us better, no doubt about that."
Green River's opening matchup against Sheridan set the tone for a weekend of challenges and resilience. The game ended with Sheridan winning 73-44. Daxton Taylor emerged as a bright spot, leading the Wolves with 14 points, including a flawless performance at the free-throw line.
"Daxton really stepped up for us. He played with poise and gave us some key moments when we needed them," Ivie said.
Hunter Lake also contributed six points and showed his tenacity on the boards, while Dawson Peterson made his presence felt defensively.
The next game against Arvada West, a top-tier 6A program out of Colorado, was another uphill climb. While the Wolves fought to earn 51 points, they were ultimately beaten by Arvada West with 78 points.
Hunter Lake once again stood out, pouring in 12 points and leading the team in assists. Dawson Peterson added five points and three steals, providing a defensive spark, while AJ Keelin brought energy with critical rebounds and hustle plays.
"Hunter's leadership has been crucial for us. He sets the tone for how hard we play," Ivie said. "And guys like AJ are making those gritty plays that don't always show up in the stats but make a huge difference."
One of the biggest takeaways for the Wolves was their rebounding success. Despite being undersized compared to their opponents, Green River consistently crashed the boards, out-rebounding both Sheridan and Laramie.
"Rebounding is about heart, not height," Ivie emphasized. "And our guys showed they've got plenty of it."
Turnovers, however, proved to be the Achilles' heel throughout the weekend, as the Wolves struggled to maintain possession in key moments.
"We've got to clean up our ball-handling and decision-making. It's something we'll focus on, but I'm confident we'll get better," Ivie added.
In their last game against Laramie, the Wolves pushed hard to close the gap in what turned into a battle of determination. Ultimately Green River ended up losing, with a final score of 84-67. Adam Robertson led the charge for the Wolves with 11 points, showcasing his ability to deliver under pressure.
"Adam had a great game for us. He gave everything on both ends of the floor," Ivie said.
Dylan Archibald was a force on the glass, pulling down six rebounds and adding eight points. Despite the loss, the Wolves' intensity never wavered, which was a point of pride for their coach.
"We've got a group that doesn't back down," she said. "That's something you can't teach, and it showed this weekend."
For a team featuring many young players still acclimating to the speed and physicality of varsity competition, these games served as a vital learning experience.
"These early games are about building confidence and toughness. The mistakes we're making now are going to make us sharper as the season goes on," said Ivie.
Looking ahead, the Wolves are already gearing up for the Flaming Gorge Classic in Green River this weekend - a tournament that provides another chance to grow and prove themselves.
"Every time we step on the court, our goal is to be the hardest working team in the gym," Ivie said. "I know this weekend made us hungrier to get better."
Though the scoreboard didn't reflect it, Green River's heart and determination were on full display. With standout performances emerging from players like Taylor, Robertson, and Lake, and a team that refuses to back down, the Wolves are laying the groundwork for a season full of potential. "We're just getting started," Ivie promised.
And if last weekend was any indication, Green River won't stay down for long.
