The Green River High School Boys Swimming and Diving team is diving into an exciting new season, stepping back into the 4A division after years of competing at the 3A level. Head Coach Colleen Seiloff shared her thoughts on what the team has to look forward to and the challenges they anticipate.
"I'm looking forward to being back and competing in 4A and seeing how we can do," Seiloff said. "We've been gone for a few years, so I guess that's probably my biggest thing. And then just seeing some of the kids that have been on the team for a few years, seeing how they're going to do in 4A. I think it'll be fun."
The Wolves bring a solid mix of experience and talent to the pool this season, with a group of upperclassmen anchoring the team.
"I think we're kind of strong with some upperclassmen. We've got a few kids that have some experience, and I think that experience is going to help us this year, for sure," Seiloff noted.
This year's senior class includes Colin Gilmore, Aiden Zimmerman, Ashton Hafner, Andrew Neher, Logan Gray, Dallon Owens, and diver Keegan Gailey.
"Our senior class did a great job in 3A last year. As a whole group, I think they're hopefully going to turn around and perform well in 4A," Seiloff said. "We also have a strong diving group this year, which is nice because we didn't have that in the girls' season. I think they're going to be able to perform well."
Among the incoming athletes, Sam Dockter has already caught the coach's attention.
"Sam's a freshman, and I think he's going to be a great contribution to the team," Seiloff said.
The Wolves are also supported by strong junior and sophomore classes, which Seiloff emphasized are full of athletes ready to make an impact.
"There are definitely some good athletes in those groups, too, that are going to be contributing this year," she said.
As the team returns to 4A competition, Seiloff is preparing her swimmers to face tough opponents.
"You know, there was Evanston, us, and Riverton that all moved back up. I think all three of those teams were competitive in 3A, and I think they'll be competitive in 4A this year," Seiloff explained. "The teams on the other side of the state, like Laramie and the Cheyenne teams, are always strong. The difference between 4A and 3A is that 3A might have a few really competitive teams, but in 4A, it's very competitive across the board."
The season kicks off with the Laramie Pentathlon and Relay Meet - an event Seiloff values for its insight into the team's strengths and weaknesses.
"It gives you a look at a little bit of everything, and you can kind of see where people are and what work you've got to do," she said. "Sometimes people surprise you in events you didn't expect. It's a good starting point."
This year, the team is focusing on consistent improvement.
"The big focus this season is just getting better," Seiloff said. "Every meet, we want to continue to grow, get faster, and learn something from every swim we do. If we can improve what we do individually, we can improve what we do as a team. We kind of just have to take care of what we can take care of, and that's getting better."
With 23 athletes on the roster and a renewed sense of purpose, the Green River Boys' Swim team is poised for a season of growth, competition, and success. As Seiloff summed it up, "It's going to be a fun season."
