As the Green River High School Boys Basketball team prepares for another season, Head Coach Laurie Ivie reflected on the groundwork laid in the offseason and the potential her squad brings to the court. After a busy summer filled with training, games, and team-building, the Wolves are ready to make their mark.
"Our offseason has been incredibly busy and productive," Coach Ivie explained. "After taking about a month off following the end of last season, we quickly got back into the swing of things with regular open gyms. Over the summer, we stayed active with camps, weight training, open gyms, and playing nearly 50 games to prepare for the upcoming season."
That dedication has forged a strong sense of camaraderie among the players. Team chemistry, Coach Ivie emphasized, will be one of their main assets.
"One of our biggest strengths heading into the season is the strong chemistry our team has developed from playing so much basketball together," she said. "During the offseason, we emphasized building team chemistry and playing team ball. By the end of the summer, we were playing a very cohesive brand of basketball. If we maintain that style of play, we will compete at a high level in a lot of games this season."
This year, the Wolves also have an advantage that has been elusive in previous seasons: depth.
"This year we have around 10 players ready to contribute at the varsity level, which is a big change from past seasons where we relied on a six to seven man rotation," Ivie said. "Having that extra depth will give us more flexibility, fresh legs, and the ability to adapt to different game situations."
The team will rely on a core group of experienced seniors to lead the way.
"We anticipate our seniors-Hunter Lake, AJ Keelin, and Dawson Peterson-along with junior Dax Taylor, to step into significant leadership roles this season," Ivie noted. But the talent pool doesn't stop there. "We have a highly competitive group of juniors and sophomores eager to earn varsity minutes and make an impact."
While the Wolves have laid a solid foundation, there's always room for growth. According to Ivie, the focus this season will be on honing defensive and rebounding consistency.
"As a program, we prioritize defense, rebounding, and competing for every possession," she explained. "This year, we're focusing on improving consistency in these areas and ensuring all players embrace their roles within our system."
The team has set both short-term and long-term goals to stay on track.
"Our primary goal for this season is to improve every single time we step on the court," Ivie said. "In the short term, this means focusing on consistent effort and execution in practices and games, learning from each experience, and making adjustments as needed. Long-term, this commitment to growth and development will help us compete at a high level and achieve success as the season progresses."
With a solid core of returning players, strong offseason preparation, and a clear focus on improvement, the Wolves are poised for an exciting season. Whether it's fostering team chemistry or embracing their roles, this group appears ready to take on the competition and leave their mark in Wyoming basketball.
