Western program receives WY Economic Development Innovation

On Tuesday, October 8, Western Wyoming Community College's (Western's) Powerline Technology program was honored with the Wyoming Economic Development Association (WEDA) Innovation Award, recognizing its significant impact on the state's workforce and economy.

WEDA's Executive Director, Brett Kahler shared, "WEDA's Innovation Award is given in recognition of projects that significantly impact Wyoming communities and its residents. The award celebrates partnerships and innovation in economic development, and Western's Powerline Technology Program perfectly fits that mold. Through public and private partnerships, the faculty and students of Western are filling a crucial role needed in Wyoming."

Lance Caldwell, Instructor of the Powerline Technology program, expressed his gratitude, stating, "We wouldn't be here today without Governor Gordon's support through the Wyoming Innovation Partnership grant. These funds have enriched countless students' lives and will continue to positively impact future generations by providing them with a prosperous future built on the knowledge and experience gained here."

The Powerline Technology program, the only one of its kind in Wyoming, was launched with support from the Wyoming Innovation Partnership (WIP) and key industry leaders like Rocky Mountain Power and Lower Valley Energy. These partners contributed scholarships, equipment, and in-kind donations to ensure students gain both theoretical and hands-on experience. In recognition of its impact, Governor Gordon highlighted the program in his State of the State Address, commending program graduate Owen Madsen for his dedication to maintaining Wyoming's power grid. The program continues to thrive with additional support from the Wyoming Rural Electrical Association (WREA), which provides $200,000 annually in scholarships, enabling the program to address Wyoming's workforce needs in the energy sector.

Western's President Dr. Kirk Young shared, "Western's Powerline Technology program is a true example of the innovative spirit we strive to foster at our college. Through strong partnerships with industry and the support of the Wyoming Innovation Partnership, this program not only addresses critical workforce needs but also has a transformative impact on our community and the state as a whole. By equipping students with the skills needed for high-demand jobs in the energy sector, we are helping to build a stronger, more resilient economy and providing opportunities for individuals to thrive right here in Wyoming."

Since its inception in August 2022, the program has produced skilled graduates who have secured employment in Wyoming and neighboring states, with each cohort growing significantly in size. As the program enters its third year, it remains a vital contributor to Wyoming's energy industry, addressing the state's workforce gaps and enhancing economic prosperity through innovative partnerships and practical training.
