Truman Elementary School plans to create Veterans Honor Garden

A garden in honor of veterans will be coming to Truman Elementary.

On Veterans Day, Truman Elementary hosted a Veterans Day celebration where students read proclamations and sang songs in honor of veterans. At the end of the event, Teacher and Organizer Jessica Hodges announced that Truman would be creating a Veterans Honor Garden in the spring.

Hodges was excited to share more details about the project.

"Truman's love and respect for all veterans runs deep within our walls, and we want to express our love and appreciation for their great sacrifice," she said. "Truman is creating a Veterans' Honor Garden this year with a living wall of honor welcoming all. The garden will be located at the front of the school for all to enjoy. This is a way we can show our love, respect, and appreciation every day of the year. We will always remember! Each year we will add to it, in conjunction with our annual Veterans Day program."

Hodges said the vision for the garden includes having flowers and bushes, along with a large patina plaque saying "We will always remember" and "In God We Trust." Hodges said she hopes for the center piece to be a bronze statue.

"We are seeking a large statue with a vision of several kids helping to hold up a flagpole," she explained.

The school also hopes to have a tall steel sign behind the statue saying "Veterans' Honor Garden," as well as some small circular steel signs with each military branch's emblem. They hope to also include a bench, which they have already had a woodworker reach out to help create.

Hodges also explained that sponsors will be able to purchase a brick, from the brick wall in which the garden will be constructed from, in honor of their veteran.

Those who have questions or are interested in sponsoring the garden can contact Jessica Hodges, Kristen Brownlee, or Stasia Tirrell at Truman Elementary.
