With the State Championship meet around the corner, the Green River Lady Wolves Swim team is charging forward with confidence after an impressive showing at their "Last Chance" meet held on October 31. The event provided the Lady Wolves an opportunity to demonstrate their growth and honor the senior members of the team who have shown dedication, skill, and leadership throughout the season. Finishing their regular season with strong performances, Green River is now preparing to compete against the best in Wyoming this Friday and Saturday in the 4A State tournament.
Among the highlights of the Last Chance meet were Green River's impressive relay teams. The Lady Wolves' "B" relay team secured first place in the 200-yard Medley Relay, with a winning time of 2:10.84 by Kaylin Uhrig, Alayna Kellhofer, Bree Van Etten, and Katelyn Maez.
Individual swimmers also had a strong meet. In the 200-yard Freestyle and the 100-yard Backstroke, Tavia Arnell came in first in both events. Tanith Smith brought her A-game as well, taking first place in the 50-yard Freestyle with a blazing time of 24.96 seconds. In the 200-yard IM, Kaylin Uhrig dominated the race, along with Alayna Kellhofer taking the lead in the 100-yard Breaststroke.
The "Last Chance" meet also allowed the team to celebrate five dedicated seniors - Tanith Smith, Hailey Luth, Bree Van Etten, Haley Clevenger, and Mallery Lyon. Head Coach Colleen Seiloff had high praise for these athletes, noting the impact each has made on the team's culture and success.
"These seniors have been the backbone of our team," Seiloff said. "Their leadership and resilience have helped shape the younger swimmers and created a sense of unity and purpose. They've taken on every challenge and inspired their teammates to push harder and aim higher."
Each senior has contributed both in and out of the pool, setting a standard of dedication that their fellow swimmers have admired and followed.
For Tanith Smith, one of the team's standout swimmers, this season has been particularly memorable. Smith, who took first in the 50-yard Freestyle at the Last Chance meet, has consistently set a high bar for the team, leading by example and inspiring younger swimmers. Haley Clevenger, another senior, demonstrated her strong technique and speed in multiple events, finishing fourth in the 100-yard Breaststroke and contributing to several relays throughout the season. Bree Van Etten, a reliable and versatile swimmer, has been a constant presence, especially in relays where she provided both skill and support to her teammates. Hailey Luth and Mallery Lyon have also played essential roles, both in competition and as pillars of encouragement, helping to keep the team grounded and motivated through the ups and downs of the season.
Reflecting on the season, Coach Seiloff emphasized the significance of this final meet.
"The Last Chance was more than just a meet-it was a celebration of our seniors and the hard work everyone's put in," she said. "I tell the girls that this is the time to celebrate, to enjoy the culmination of three months of dedication. No matter where we finish at State, we can be proud of everything we've achieved."
As the Lady Wolves approach the State meet, they are benefiting from the "taper" period, which allows them to rest and recover while fine-tuning their techniques. Coach Seiloff noted that the team is taking advantage of the reduced training intensity.
"The girls are definitely enjoying the tapering-getting to sleep in a bit and not putting in as many yards. But they're still very focused and excited to perform their best at state," Seiloff said.
The Lady Wolves will depart for state today, ready to compete on Friday and Saturday in Cheyenne. With the combined efforts of dedicated seniors and a talented roster for the team, Green River fans are excited to see how far the Lady Wolves can go. After an extraordinary season, the Lady Wolves are eager to show their hard work and team spirit as they face the best swimmers from across Wyoming.
