The Green River High School Cross Country wrapped up their season during the State tournament this past weekend.
The Wolves headed to State in Cheyenne at the Little America Golf Course last Saturday. For the 4A run, there were 13 teams in total that the Wolves ran against at the State Cross Country Championships, including Star Valley, Kelly Walsh, Natrona County, Sheridan, Jackson Hole, Thunder Basin, Cheyenne East, Evanston, Riverton, Cheyenne Central, Laramie, Campbell County and Rock Springs. Each team got to bring seven boy athletes and seven girl athletes to State.
The team ran a new course that had a lot more rolling hills. The team had “pretty good times, considering all the hills in that course,” said Head Coach Craig Leavitt, which made it harder for the athletes to get new personal records during this race.
“The underclassmen stepped it up and did pretty good,” explained Coach Leavitt.
This season as a whole was challenging for the team as they moved up to a higher level of competition against bigger schools.
“It was a pretty rough transition from 3A back to 4A. We are definitely the underdogs,” explained Coach Leavitt. “I got some work to do to prepare the team for next season.”
There were a lot of freshmen that went to State, which helped them prepare for what to expect for next season. As they go into the future with more experience, the team will also be looking forward to adding new freshmen next season.
“We should hopefully be getting a bunch of new girl athletes from the Middle School coming up,” he explained.
Coach Leavitt said he is excited to coach the new talent coming into the team for next year.
