Green River Wolves take on Powell for Homecoming

The Green River High School Wolves Football team took on the Powell Panthers this past Friday with a good Homecoming crowd and perfect fall weather.

The Wolves came out strong to start the game. After a fine kickoff return to the 35-yard line by Dax Taylor, Quarterback Max Hintz completed two passes to Taylor, added a six-yard run of his own, and hit Evan Maser with two passes including a 24-yard touchdown reception. With the P.A.T. kick by Braxton Doak good, the Wolves were looking good early as they took a quick 7-0 lead.

Powell got an excellent kickoff return of their own and took just five running plays to tie the score at 7-7.

Just two plays into the Wolves' next possession, they fumbled the ball. Powell wasted no time, taking just two plays to score and gain the lead 14-7.

On their next possession, the Wolves got pass completions to Taylor and Chaz Helmandollar before Jaydon Walther took the ball in on a six-yard run to tie the score 14-14. Powell's quarterback Josh Wisniewski picked up a fumbled snap on the next series and scored on a two-yard run to regain the lead 21-14.

The Wolves mounted a seven-play drive, which included Dax Taylor catching a 21-yard pass, breaking his brother Dylan Taylor's all-time receiving record for the Wolves. Unfortunately, Green River's drive stalled. Later they finished the first half scoring on a 31-yard field goal to close Powell's lead to 21-17.

The second half of the game was all Powell as they scored five touchdowns. With all their P.A.T kicks good, including one for two points, they finished with a convincing  57-17 win, shutting out the Wolves in the second half.

While the Wolves were able to move the ball, turnovers gave Powell scoring opportunities and stopped the Wolves' momentum. Powell also dominated with a powerful running game and some timely pass completions.

The win moved Powell to 4-3 on the season, while the Wolves fell to 1-6.

Dom Hamel continued his strong defensive play for the Wolves, as did Jace Stewart. Hamel had 11 tackles, two for a loss, with Stewart getting eight tackles and a fumble recovery.

Head Coach Blaine Christensen, while disappointed with the loss, was pleased with his team's first-half performance.

The Wolves' final two games of the season start this Friday against powerful Cody in Cody before finishing up with #1 Star Valley on the road.
