Pineda's Kenpo Karate Team sent 10 students to compete at the Valor Karate Tournament in Farmington, Utah on September 21, 2024.
The group that attended the event were all beginning rank yellow and orange belts. The young team responded with great performances. Participants competed in forms, sparring, weapons, self-defense, padded sword sparring, flag sparring, and board breaking.
Strat Friel led the group, winning 1st place in Weapons, 1st place in Sparring, and 3rd place in Forms. He also won Adult Grand Champion with his Weapons form.
Emery Friel dominated her age group divisions with four 1st places in Self-Defense, Sparring, Forms, and Weapons.
Strat and Emery have combined for 7 Grand Champion awards this year.
David Anderson, Addy Warner, Triss and Adalind Nash attended their first out of town tournament with good results. David Anderson placed 2nd in weapons with his sword kata. Addy Warner placed 2nd in Continuous Sparring and 3rd in Sparring. Triss Nash and Adalind Nash placed 4th in Sparring.
Anthony St. John placed 3rd in Weapons. Evan St John placed 2nd in Sparring and 2nd in Weapons.
Ayzleigh Ray had a good day placing 1st in Forms and 2nd in Self-Defense.
Laken Jewkes placed 1st in Weapons, 1st in Padded Sword Sparring, 3rd in Flag Sparring, and 3rd in Forms.
The karate team will finish out the year and participate in one more event on November 2nd in Salt Lake City.
