The YWCA of Sweetwater County is set to host a new fundraising event, the First Annual Heroes and Heels, this Saturday, September 28 at the Bunning Hall Freight Station in Rock Springs.
According to Program Director Gina DeBoer, this event was created to help bring recognition to Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which starts October 1.
"We created Heroes and Heels so that local heroes and community leaders could take a stand against domestic violence while raising funds to support victims in our own communities, and most importantly bring awareness to the issue of domestic violence," DeBoer explained.
The event will see a variety of local leading figures in the community "walking the isle in her shoes." Participants will not only walk the isle in high heels, but they will also take part in several contests including best decorated heels and best runway walk.
Some of the notable participants include Green River Officer Martha Holzgrafe and her K-9 companion Buddy, GRHS Football Coach Blaine Christensen, Sweetwater County School District 2 Administrator Matt Mikkelsen, Rock Springs City Councilman Tim Robinson, Rock Springs Civic Center Superintendent J.J. Syvrud, and many others.
The event will also include a spaghetti dinner, DJ, raffle, and auction. All proceeds will go towards the YWCA Victims Advocacy Center. DeBoer also explained how guests can contribute further.
"One of the biggest expenses and challenges for us in helping victims of Domestic Violence is obtaining new phones for them as an essential part of gaining their freedom," she said. "One way you can help if you are attending this event, is to purchase a $35 Straight Talk phone card. Everyone who brings a phone card will automatically receive 10 extra raffle tickets."
If you are interested in purchasing tickets to attend the event or if you are interested in taking part as a "runway walker," please contact the YWCA at 307-382-3124.
