Diaper Need Awareness Week is September 23 - 29, and United Way of Southwest Wyoming is launching its Diaper Need Awareness Drive starting Monday, September 23.
"This important initiative runs through September 28th and aims to support the tiniest members of our community-our babies," United Way explained in a press release. "Our goal is to collect 5,000 diapers to bridge the gap in diaper needs and ensure every child gets the best start in life."
Diapers of any size and baby wipes can be donated, and United Way noted that diapers sizes 4-7 are most needed. Donations can be dropped off at designated locations this week. In Green River, donations can be left at the Sweetwater County Library. In Rock Springs, donations can be taken to the White Mountain Library, Rock Springs Library, or United Way of Southwest Wyoming. New or opened packages are also welcome. Monetary donations can be made by visiting swunitedway.org or texting "UWSW" to 269-89. Those who wish to be even more involved can also volunteer or host a diaper drive of their own.
"Diaper banks are a lifeline for local families," United Way said. "With diaper prices rising by about 32% in the last year, many families face tough choices between buying diapers and meeting other basic needs."
Last year, United Way distributed 97,261 diapers-a 34.25% increase from the previous year. In Wyoming, the cost of infant care in a single-parent household takes up 32% of their income, and the average annual cost of diapers is $936, United Way reported.
"Diaper need is more than just an inconvenience; it's a public health crisis affecting the well-being of families," the press release explained. "Access to a steady supply of clean diapers helps parents stay employed, complete their education, and ensure their children's health and happiness. Every contribution, no matter how small, can make a significant impact."
Shelley Richno, Community Impact Coordinator at United Way, emphasized, "This past year has been especially tough for many families. No one should have to choose between feeding their family and buying diapers. Your donation can make a real difference, as there are no other programs that provide diapers directly."
Richno also thanked this year's diaper drive sponsors, Bayer, Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County and Tata Chemicals, explaining that monetary gifts allow United Way to purchase specific sizes when needed.
Families in need can access diapers through the Food Bank of Sweetwater County in Green River or Rock Springs on distribution days.
