Celebrate Constitution and Citizenship Day

Each year, on September 17, Americans celebrate Constitution and Citizenship Day which recognizes the adoption of the United States Constitution and those who have become U.S. citizens. On September 17, 1787, the Founding Fathers signed the U.S. Constitution in Philadelphia, and for over 200 years the Constitution has served as the supreme law of the land. The Constitution, along with the Bill of Rights and other amendments, define our government and guarantee our rights. This is a time when we can encourage Americans to reflect on the rights and responsibilities of citizenship and what it means to be a U.S. citizen.

Voting is a precious right of US citizenship, defended and preserved by the sacrifice of men and women who paid the ultimate price for our freedom. Citizen voting is at the heart of the American republic - an institution we must preserve at all costs.

The southern border situation has devolved dramatically over the past few years. Millions of aliens have been released into communities across the nation. This has opened the door to the abuse of our electoral system. Although federal law prohibits those who are not U.S. citizens from voting in federal elections, it also paradoxically prohibits States from requiring voters to have proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections. Under any circumstances, this federal prohibition against citizenship verification makes little sense, but it is especially troubling given the current scale of the illegal immigration crisis. We need Congress to pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (“SAVE Act”), which would require voters to provide proof of citizenship.

Only American citizens should decide America’s future. No country can survive that allows guests and illegals to determine the future of the nation or its citizens. Every noncitizen who votes cancels the legitimate vote of an American citizen.

Please join with me as we celebrate Constitution and Citizenship Day and let us preserve this great nation and the right for citizens to elect those that will represent us, WE THE PEOPLE, in our government.
