Western celebrates 65th anniversary

This year marks six and a half decades of empowering minds, fostering innovation, and shaping futures at Western Wyoming Community College (Western). The college would like to personally thank all constituents that have graduated, worked at Western, served on our board, attending college now, or supported us in our mission in providing higher education excellence. In appreciation of all your support, we invite you to our 65th celebration on Saturday, September 7.

The 65th anniversary celebration will take place from 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Rock Springs campus. This event is open to the public. The day will include family activities, live music, cornhole and pickleball tournaments, food trucks, a neon disco roller rink, fireworks, and much more. For a full schedule, visit westernwyoming.edu/65anniversary.

Established in 1959, Western had 40 enrolled students and only taught night classes. A few years later the college moved locations to occupy the former Reliance High School and, in 1962, Western had its first and only graduate. Even more has changed, including being the home of the Spartans to the home of the Mustangs, eleven outreach centers, expansion of residence halls, and the latest, a new health science addition that's under construction.

Western's Community Relations Specialist David Tate shared, "None of this would have happened without the vision and dedication of members of our communities. Together we created a ripple that has turned into a wave. I am incredibly excited and honored that we're able to hold this event in celebration of Western and the commitment of our community."

The community also has a chance to meet Western's newest president, Dr. Kirk Young. Young, and his wife Katie, will be serving free ice cream to the first 65 people in Western Commons from 2 to 3 p.m. You can also find out more information about Young at westernwyoming.edu/president.

Western is looking forward to sharing the celebration with Southwest Wyoming and hopes attendees make a day of it and enjoy their time on the campus and meeting the new president.
