As the Green River Lady Wolves Volleyball team heads into the new season, excitement is high, fueled by a mix of seasoned veterans and talented newcomers on the team. Head Coach Jessica Demaret is optimistic about her team's potential, confident that the hard work her players have put in will yield success on the court.
"We have a lot of returning players with varsity experience, along with some younger players stepping into varsity roles this season," Demaret said. "All of these players are working together, putting in the effort to make this team successful."
One of the team's strengths this year lies in its leadership. Green River is anchored by a group of four seniors who have set the tone in the gym from day one. According to Demaret, their impact goes beyond just their skill set.
"Our seniors have been doing a great job these first weeks of practice, setting high expectations and demonstrating leadership day in and day out," Coach Demaret explained. "They're not just leaders on the court-they're guiding the younger players and fostering a positive team culture."
This blend of seasoned experience and young talent gives the team a unique dynamic. While Demaret acknowledges that the chemistry is still developing between the returners and the newer players, she believes the early tournaments will provide the perfect opportunity for the team to gel.
"We have a skilled team this year," the coach noted. "Several younger players will see varsity time, but they haven't yet played in a game setting alongside our returners. Over the next couple of weeks, we'll see that chemistry start to come along."
As for areas of improvement, Demaret has her sights set on sharpening the Lady Wolves' blocking and first-ball kills.
"Improving those two things will definitely make us a well-rounded team," she said.
The Lady Wolves are gearing up for some intense matches this season, with a few key rivals in their sights. The team's long-standing rivalry with Rock Springs is sure to bring excitement, with Demaret describing the atmosphere in the gym as "electrifying." Additionally, Kelly Walsh remains a tough opponent, consistently ranking as one of the top programs in the state.
Despite the challenges ahead, Demaret has high hopes for her team.
"We want to continue competing with the top programs in the state and put ourselves in a position to turn some of these close matches into wins," she said. "We always want to represent GRHS volleyball in a positive way and grow young ladies who are respectful, hardworking, and have a positive attitude-not just in the gym, but also in our community."
With a mix of talent, leadership, and a clear focus on improvement, the Green River Lady Wolves are ready to take on the competition and make their mark this season.
