Tennis team starts season with close matches

The Green River High School Tennis team had one week of practice before kicking off the season against five North Region opponents for the short 2024 fall tennis season.

The Wolves have a number of experienced players returning from last year in both the boys and girls programs. Head Coach Phil Harder leads the team again this year, assisted by Andy Trumbell and Haylen Cordova.

The Wolves started the season on their home court, hosting one of the top teams in the State, the Cody Broncos, and also matching up against the Powell Panthers.

Cody shut out the Green River girls team 5-0, but the Lady Wolves put up a battle in both singles matches. It took Cody three sets to beat the Wolves #1 Singles player Rylin Arnell and the #2 Grace Gomez. Also, the Lady Wolves #2 Doubles team of Sidney Lopez and Brynlee Beutel fell after going into tie breakers in both of their sets, losing 6-7 (5-7, 6-7 (7-9).

The Green River boys also fell to Cody, winning one match and losing the team score 4-1. The Wolves #3 Doubles team of Jonathan Meyers and Gabe Maez won in straight sets 6-4 and 6-1.

The Wolves had good success against Powell, with both the boys and the girls winning the team score 4-1, and with the only loss for both boys and girls coming in #1 Singles play.

On Thursday, the teams took the long road trip to Gillette to take on teams from Campbell County and Thunder Basin High Schools. The boys won the team score, defeating Campbell County 4-1. The girls lost by the same score, 4-1, with the #2 Singles player Grace Gomez being the lone winner for the Lady Wolves.

Against Thunder Basin, the girls won the team score 4-1 while the boys lost a close one 3-2.

Returning home, the boys and girls teams both fell to a strong Jackson team. The girls lost 5-0 with a number of close matches, while the boys also fell 5-0, with some close matches.

Green River will continue their home stand with games against Rock Springs, Kelly Walsh, Natrona County, Rawlins and Laramie in the next two weeks.
