Green River High Golfers keep pushing for success

Green River High School Golf had a successful second week of their regular season.

The Junior Varsity team traveled to Valley View Golf Course in Star Valley. It was the first competitive tournament to start their high school golf careers, with Sophomore Brody Fuller as the top finisher, shooting a 96.

The Varsity team competed in the Pinedale Invitational, and once again Senior Kaleb Gunter was a standout on the boys' team, finishing in the top 10 as the eighth place medalist with two-day total of 167. Other notable performances include Junior Adam Robertson and Sophomore Roman Brown coming in at 11th and 13th respectively.

Mylie Mele was the top finisher on the girls' team, coming in 10th place.

When asked how the season is going so far, Head Coach Karly Eyre had high praise for the team.

"So far, the season has been showing us lots of promise and all the work the kids have been putting in over the summer," she said. "We have had three boys in the 80s, Kaleb breaking into the 70s and several lowest rounds in competition from several of our athletes. It has been great to see our new athletes step up and perform at a competitive level, straight out of the gates."

Eyre also is pleased with the makeup of the team like this year.

"We have a mixture of seasoned veteran players coming back and performing very well," she added. "We have also been happy to see our younger returning players and new players rising to the occasion and posting competitive scores. It is collectively the first team I have coached that all have prior golf experience and knowledge."

The coach went on to explain the goals set for the team.

"The team is working towards individual focuses that will help them push towards the post-season challenges ahead," Eyre said. "For some, that means working towards consistency, while others it is the mentality they use on the tee box and throughout the course. As a team, it is to get at many athletes ready to fight for a chance to get into those top 20 spots at conference and get to the State Championships."

This week JV will head to the Kemmerer Invitational, with Varsity staying in Sweetwater County for the Rock Springs High School Tiger Invitational Thursday and Friday.
