River Festival returns this weekend

The Green River Chamber of Commerce is hosting the 23rd Annual River Festival this weekend, August 16 and 17.

The Chamber, which is a non-profit organization that is "working to provide the community with a quality event for both spectators and participants," gave details about this year's festival in a press release.

River Festival begins Friday afternoon with marathon half and 10k registration beginning at 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

At 5 p.m., the annual Cajun Shrimp Boil will be open to the public. Tickets will be sold in advance with 800 meals available.

"Make sure and get them early as we sell out every year," Chamber Communication Specialist Nicole McGillis said. "Our Cajun shrimp boil is a fan favorite!"

Participants will have the option to purchase a 5 p.m. dinner ticket or a 6 p.m. dinner ticket. Prices are $20 for a "Canoe" (approximately a half pound of shrimp) or $30 for a "Boat" (approximately one pound of shrimp), both of which also come with potatoes, corn, sausage and soda or water. The "Date Night Special" is $55 for two "Boats."

"We can also do TO-GO boxes, for those of you who would like to eat at home," McGillis said.

The Chamber will also be selling tickets for a spaghetti dinner served by Knights of Columbus as a fundraiser. Tickets can be purchased at the Green River Chamber of Commerce.

The Great Duck Race will take place at 12 p.m. on Saturday, August 17, which is a fundraiser for the Chamber, and tickets are on sale now at the Green River Chamber. Tickets are 1 for $5 or 5 for $20, and participants do not need to be present to win. Cash prizes of $500 for first place, $250 for second place, and $100 for third place will be awarded.

"The Green River Chamber will once again be partnering with Seedskadee Trout Unlimited to bring you the Flaunt your Fish competition," McGillis added.

Flaunt your Fish will take place at Expedition Island, with voting happening during River Festival. Results will be announced at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Participants will sponsor a fish for $50 for this competition and then decorate the fish.

"Over the years, the creativity of these fish has been amazing as businesses and individuals alike enjoy the creativity and competition of this event," McGillis said.

Local band NoWhere Fast will be performing on Friday evening beginning at 5:30 p.m. Following the concert will be a fireworks show.

"Fireworks start at dark and they continue to be a huge success," the press release said.

River Festival will also be host to several homemade and handmade craft vendors Friday and Saturday on the Island and in Ever's Park, the Chamber added. There will be a number of vendors selling unique jewelry, artwork and other handmade items.

Saturday, the Chamber will host the 21st Annual "Run with the Horses Marathon" to take place on the Wild Horse Loop Tour.

"The race will be professionally timed again this year," McGillis explained. "Timing is more efficient and the results are immediate."

The run will begin and end on Expedition Island. This event will also include a half marathon and a 10K run and will begin at 7 a.m.

"We had 160 participants for the marathon last year," McGillis said. "Locally, we again drew more from the surrounding area with the addition of the 10K run."

Runners proceed through town, on to the Wild Horse Loop Tour and then turn and follow the same route back. There will be aid stations every two miles with water, PowerAde and energy snacks alternating at each station. The Chamber encourages people to learn more and register at http://www.runwiththehorsesmarathon.com.

The "Beer Garden" will also run Friday night and Saturday, and food vendors will be set up for both days. There will be two DJs this year, with The Party Squad performing on Saturday at 11 a.m. on the Island and Turn up the Volume performing on Evers Park.

"The Car Show on Evers Park will once again be hosted by the Sweetwater Rodders-so polish up your favorite ride," McGillis added. "Cars, trucks, motorcycles, vintage and new are welcome. We had 56 cars and motorcycles register last year. You can register your ride at the Green River Chamber or on the day of the event."

Registration costs $10 per vehicle.

Taking place in conjunction with River Festival, the Green River Arts Council will once again be presenting the 19th Annual Art on the Green competition, as well as the shorter Battle on the Green.

Art on the Green is a 24-hour live art competition that will begin at 11 a.m. Friday, August 16 at the Expedition Island Pavilion. The quick draw competition of Battle on the Green will take place Friday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. and consist of three rounds of 30 minutes. In both competitions, 2D and 3D artists will compete to win cash prizes. This year there will also be a Kid's Creation Corner, taking place from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. Art sales will take place both days, and the awards dinner will take place at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. All events are free and open to the public.
