The Green River Knights Varsity baseball team recently played against the Evanston Outlaws on Tuesday, June 18 and the Saratoga Cutthroats on Sunday, June 23.
For the Knights' first game they played at home, hosting the Evanston Outlaws. Starting in the first inning, neither team scored any runs. During the second inning, the Knights took the lead and scored one run to the Outlaws' zero. Neither team scored again during the third and fourth innings. Then during the fifth inning, the game changed course, with the Outlaws scoring two runs to the Knights' one. Lastly, in the eighth inning, the Knights scored zero runs to the Outlaws' five, causing the game to result in the Knights' loss, with a final score of 2-7.
The Knights played the Evanston Outlaws for the second time on Thursday. During this game, neither team scored in the first inning. During the second inning the Knights struggled, scoring zero runs to the Outlaws' three. Then during the third inning the Knights held their own, scoring three runs to the Outlaws' two. Neither team scored in the fourth and fifth inning. During the sixth inning, making a comeback, the Knights jumped back in, scoring three runs to the Outlaws' zero. Finally in the seventh inning the Knights scored zero runs to the Outlaws' two. The game resulted in the Knights' close loss, with the final score of 6-7.
"We got beat, which is fine for conference games. We played two good games, and they beat us in an extra inning. Those games are always amped up, because they're a pretty good rival for us," said Head Coach Ben Lail.
The Knights will face the Outlaws again this week as well, and the coach added that the team is "looking forward to that one."
Leading the team against the Outlaws were Oliver Akin with two runs and Ryker Dane, Lander Welch, Kamden Liebelt and Travin Brown with one run each.
Moving to Sunday, June 23, the Knights played against the Saratoga Cutthroats. In the first inning, neither team scored any runs. The Knights hit first during the second inning, scoring two runs to the Cutthroats' zero. Then in the third inning the Knights again took the lead, scoring one run to the Cutthroats' zero. For the fourth, fifth and sixth innings the score remained 3-0. Lastly, in the seventh inning, the Knights scored three runs to the Cutthroats' zero. The game ended with the Knights' smooth victory, with an final score of 6-0.
Leading the team this game was Oliver Akin with two runs, along with Lander Welch, Jace Paoli, Karson Hansen, Brody Fuller and Dallyn Buschelman with one run each.
For the Knights' second game on Sunday, they played a second game against the Saratoga Cutthroats. In the first inning, neither team scored. The Knights again took the lead in the second inning and scored one run to the Cutthroats' zero. During the third inning, once again neither team scored, leaving the Knights ahead. Then in the fourth inning the Knights scored five runs to the Cutthroats' one. Green River added another point during the fifth inning as well. Lastly in the sixth inning, the Knights scored a monumental 11 runs to the Cutthroats' zero. The game resulted in the Knights' landslide win, with a final score of 18-1.
Leading the team were Skyler Lee and Ryker Dane with three runs each. Next were Brackin Lail, Travin Brown, Ben Lail, Kamden Liebelt and Jaydon Walther with two runs each, along with Brody Fuller and Jace Paoli with one run each.
"Saratoga was good," Coach Lail commented. "We had a good day, that's for sure."
Looking forward to the local tournament, the Knights are focused on playing their best.
Tonight at 8 p.m. the Green River Knights will be playing at Stratton Myers Park against the Lockwood Razorbacks. This is the Knights' first game in the Green River Knight Invite Wood Bat Tournament that will be going on through this Sunday, June 30. This is the largest tournament this year in the State of Wyoming, with over 10 varsity teams competing. The Knights' games will be at 8 p.m. each night of the tournament and they will play one game at 10 a.m. on Sunday. All are welcome to attend and pop down to Stratton Myers Park in support of the local team.
