Wyoming Republicans and Democrats reacted Sunday to President Joe Biden’s decision not to seek reelection.
“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden said in a social media post Sunday.
He also endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee.
Wyoming Democratic Party Chair Joe Barbuto said that the announcement wasn’t what he was hoping for, but that he respects the decision.
“Throughout the course of his presidency, I’ve trusted Joe Biden to make decisions that were in the best interest of our party, and, more importantly, our nation and world. He has yet to let me down, and that remains true today,” Barbuto wrote. “While this news is not what I was hoping for, I am in awe of the courage and patriotism it took for President Biden to reach this decision; my respect for him as a leader has only grown.”
The party did not immediately endorse a candidate and it did not immediately reply to a request for comment.
“Though some uncertainty may exist about what happens next, our resolve to continue the good work of the Biden Administration and Democratic Party remains steadfast as ever. Our party’s presidential nominee in 2024 will stand on a foundation of success and achievement thanks to the dedicated public service of President Joe Biden,” Barbuto wrote in a statement.
Wyoming Republicans took the opportunity to stand by Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and his vice presidential pick, JD Vance.
“Joe Biden’s decision to step aside is a good one. However, we need to remember the Democrats are still in control and this administration has months to run,” Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon said. “I am confident Americans will make the right choice in November to vote out the failed policies of the Biden Administration by voting for President Trump and JD Vance. In the meantime, the people of Wyoming can remain confident I will spare no effort or expense in defending our interests.”
Wyoming U.S. Sen. John Barrasso on X, formerly known as Twitter, added that Biden not running again shows that Democrats are admitting failure for the past four years.
“With Joe Biden dropping out of the presidential race, Democrats are running from their record of ruin. They are admitting to the failures of the last four years, he said. “Four more months until Americans elect President Trump, and we get our country back on track.”
U.S. Rep. Harriet Hageman called for Biden to resign from the presidency.
“It has long been apparent that Joe Biden has no business running a popsicle stand, let alone the most powerful nation on Earth. His decision to withdraw from the race is the right one, but it is not the only such decision he should make: He should now resign from the presidency itself,” she said. “The Democrats are now faced with a catastrophe of their own making, and I look forward to finding out who will be their new candidate to get demolished by President Donald Trump in November.”
