Wyo. officials respond to Trump shooting

Wyoming's elected officials responded to the attempted assassination of Former President Donald Trump last Saturday with concern and condemnation of political violence.

Governor Mark Gordon released the following statement on Saturday: "President Trump, his family and the families of the victims of today's shooting are in our prayers. We are thankful for the professional and quick response of the Secret Service. This is truly a sad day for our Republic, and should serve as a wake-up call for all Americans to express disagreement without resorting to violence."

U.S. Senators John Barrasso and Cynthia Lummis (both R-WY) also issued statements quickly after the shooting.

"Today, the nation witnessed a horrifying assassination attempt on President Trump," Barrasso said. "America is grateful for the quick action of the Secret Service and local law enforcement. I'm praying for the victims and their families. Donald Trump is a warrior and will not be intimidated by this cowardly attack."

"I am horrified by the attempted assassination that took place at today's Trump rally," Lummis said. "I am relieved President Trump's injuries are minor, but my heart breaks for the person who was killed and those who were injured. I am eternally grateful for the swift actions of law enforcement who acted quickly to neutralize the suspect and prevent greater tragedy. Political violence has no place in this country."

Rep. Harriet Hageman posted on her X (formerly Twitter) account: "A deranged individual has shot the former and future President of the United States. Join me in praying for President Trump's safety and recovery."

Secretary of State Chuck Gray posted on X: "Never surrender. I'm praying for President Trump and our entire country."

Several of the Sweetwater County Commissioner spoke about their reaction to the event during their comments in the July 16 meeting. Commissioner Island Richards summed up their reactions and beliefs in his response, which also pointed out the need for unity in local politics.

"We might think that we are insulated from the crazy divisiveness that leads to despicable acts like this, but we're not," Richards said, pointing out how he has heard elected officials call for violence and has seen campaign materials mailed into our local community attacking our incumbents.

"I find it all disgusting and ignorant," Richards continued. "There's always room for differences in policy, as long as it is an honest discussion. But ad hominem attacks that are meant to do nothing but dehumanize a political opponent have no place in our elections. It's ridiculous that that kind of behavior has found its way into Sweetwater County."
