Salas shines at Colorado Cup Event in Casper

Local Junior Golfer Isabell Salas represented Wyoming at a Colorado Junior Cup series event at 3 Crowns Golf Course in Casper this past week. The event was a two-day, 36-hole competition. Salas shot a three over par 75 to secure the win on day two after finishing day one tied for third.

According to Samantha Crawford, manager of the junior cup series, this is the third year that the CO PGA has hosted the event at 3 Crowns.

"We are always looking for opportunities to get more Wyoming junior golfers involved in the Cup events, and hosting in locations like Casper and Cheyenne has been a great success," Crawford said.

Crawford also credits new Wyoming State Golf Association Director Matt Kantor for helping promote the Wyoming events.

"Matt has been great in promoting the collaboration between the CO PGA and the Wyoming State Golf Association and was very receptive to us extending an invitation to the top finishers at the Wyoming Junior Amateur," she said.

The Colorado Junior Cup series is by invitation only. It provides an alternative opportunity for top junior golfers to show their skills in a local competitive environment. Events are submitted for the possibility of earning American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) stars, which is a national ranking system for junior golfers. Colorado junior golf cup events play from yardages that are consistent with college golf yardages. For example, the girls play approximately 6,000 to 6,300 yards and boys play approximately 7,000 to 7,400 yards.

The primary focus of the Colorado Junior Cup series is to give opportunities for college-bound golfers in Colorado, eastern Wyoming, and a small part of South Dakota.

Wyoming golfers are invited based on Wyoming High School Activities Association (WHSAA) boys and girls State Championship results, focusing on the 2-A top three boys and top girl, 3-A top five boys and top three girls, and 4-A top 10 boys and top five girls. An exemption was also offered for the top six finishers on the boy's side and top three finishers on the girl's side for the Wyoming State Junior Amateur that was held in June at Cottonwood Golf Course in Torrington, Wyoming.

Salas earned an invitation from her finish as the 3-A State runner up, as well as her recent top-three finish at the Wyoming Junior Amateur.

Salas will continue to represent Wyoming at various tournaments throughout Utah, Colorado, and Nevada to finish out her junior career before she heads to Central Wyoming College as their top recruit.
