After 16 years of commitment and service, Jim Zimmerman is retiring as the Sweetwater County Fire Inspector and Code Enforcement Officer — a position Jim himself helped to create.
When asked about his most notable career highlights, Jim thoughtfully explained: “This position has provided me with many opportunities to work alongside numerous Sweetwater County agencies, but most importantly it’s allowed me to build relationships with the citizens of Sweetwater County.”
Zimmerman also noted that many people believe that the job of enforcing codes could be one of difficulty. However, he’s never seen it that way.
“I believed so strongly in building relationships with the people (as a nuisance officer) with the goal of safe homes for all Sweetwater County residents,” he said.
Zimmerman’s connection to the people of Sweetwater County was evident as his retirement party was filled with well wishers from different agencies, including Sweetwater County Sheriff John Grossnickle, several County Commissioners, and family and friends alike.
County Economic Development Specialist Kayla McDonald said: “I’ve had the privilege of working with Jim for the last 4 years. He is extraordinary person and he will be missed by everyone who has had the pleasure of working with and knowing him.”
Prior to his position with the county, Zimmerman was a telephone engineer with GTE (General Telephone & Electric) and a regional sales representative with Oldcastle Materials. He also owned and operated an architectural drafting service and served as a Green River City Councilman from 2019 to 2023. Jim is equally as proud of his time on the City Council, which he credits for building even stronger bonds with the community.
“I always looked at my time as a Councilman as another way to help the County and it’s residents,” he explained.
Zimmerman had the following words for the next person in his position: “If you can find connections with the community and respect the constituents, you will be successful.”
As for Zimmerman’s plans for his retirement, he explained that he and his wife Deb of nearly 46 years, who was also his high school sweetheart, will be moving to Colorado in order for him to be a full-time “papa” to his grandchildren. This is a job he described as “one of the best I can think of!”
