Wolves Track and Field wrap up season with top finishes at State Championships

This past week 10 Green River High School athletes, six girl competitors with one alternate for the relay and three boy competitors, participated in the Wyoming State Track and Field Championships. The competition took place at Harry Gelden Stadium at Casper's Kelly Walsh High School last Thursday through Saturday, May 16-18.

The weather cooperated for the most part, although the wind was ever present and did cause suspension of the Pole Vault on Friday. The event was moved to Saturday, which Head Track Coach Dan Hansen believed may have hurt his vaulters, "as they were vaulting well" before that.

Overall, Coach Hansen felt that "the kids competed well, especially considering that all but two athletes will be returning next year."

Hansen went on to note that one of the two seniors, Chris Wilson, was only one inch off the school record in the Long Jump. Wilson ended up taking second while losing the State Championship by one quarter of an inch, with a great leap of 22 feet 11 inches. He also missed the school record in the Triple Jump by just five inches while setting his Personal Record with another excellent leap of 45 feet three inches and a second-place finish.

For the Lady Wolves, Hansen noted that Junior Lillian Allison "threw the discus well," taking third place with a throw of 119 feet and two inches, after not getting what she wanted in the Shot Put, while Sophomore Teammate Sophia Arnold "had a solid meet in the throws."

The Coach was also pleased with the performance of the 4X400 Relay team of Junior Izzy Murdock, Junior Eva Murray, Freshman Nicole Wilson and Senior Madison Murdock. The team finished eighth and set a P.R. of 4:11.58.

Hansen also said the team will miss the senior leadership of Chris Wilson, Madison Murdock, Lydia Westenskow, James Eason, Raab Poignee and Jessica Owens. Still, there will be many underclassman eligible to return next year, along with another fine incoming freshman class.
