The Green River Wolves Softball team competed at the 4A State Championship Tournament last weekend in Gillette.
Previously the Wolves' chances depended on Kelly Walsh Trojans losing either one of their last games. Kelly Walsh did lose a game, and Green River got their chance to compete at State. In the first game of the State Championships, the Green River Wolves played against the Campbell County Camels. In the first inning, the Wolves scored zero runs to the Camels' four. In the second and third innings, the Wolves didn't score. In the fourth inning, the Wolves did score their first run. The Wolves lost the game 16-1.
Giving the Wolves their single run during the game was Gina Barajas (Cassie Kelly was the pinch runner for Barajas).
"Overall, the girls played well. There wasn't anything that they did that would constitute them not winning. I mean, they played as hard as they could," said Head Coach Blair McEndaffer.
In the second game for the Wolves, they played the Rock Springs Lady Tigers. Taking the lead in the first inning, the Wolves scored three runs to the Tigers' two. Following that the Tigers took the lead for the remainder of the game. In the fourth inning the Wolves scored one run to the Tigers' two.
Leading the team were Izzy Kelly with two runs and Gina Barajas and Haidyn Terry with one run each. The Wolves had seven hits at bat. The game resulted in the Wolves losing with a final score of 4-10. This loss eliminated the Green River Wolves Softball team from the State Championship.
"They played really well against Rock Springs," explained Coach McEndaffer. "We were in that game the entire game, we just had some things that didn't fall our way, but we competed and that's what we went there to do."
Concluding the 2024 season, they say goodbye to high school senior softball players Terryn Avery, Gina Barajas, Aaliyah Casper, Abby Harrison, Autumn Cooper, Emma Olson, Laynie Fundell, and manager Maisie Peter.
Additionally coach McEndaffer added, "This group of seniors has a special place in my heart and especially the four that have been with me since the beginning when the program started. From the time they were freshman, going through all the growing pains of this program, they make it what it is today as far as their impact on future generations. Im really, really sad to see them go."
The four young women, Terryn, Gina, Aaliyah and Abby were all a part of the Green River Wolves Softball team since its formation in 2021.
Congratulations to the West All-Conference players that received honors. First team players were Kodi Allred, Terryn Avery and Chacee Shiner. Second team players were Izzy Kelley, Gina Barajas and Haidyn Terry. Izzy Kelley also ended the season with 19 stolen bases and was ranked number one in the West Conference in Wyoming for stolen bases.
Ultimately, Green River will head into summer looking forward to the further progress of the next set of Green River Wolves Softball players.
