The Green River Wolves Boys Soccer team headed to Powell to play a conference game against the Panthers on Friday.
It was a close game during the first half, with no goals made by either team. In the second half, the Wolves scored two goals and won the game with a final score of 2-0.
Leading the team were Irie Kuball and Jaxon Morris with one goal each, along with Braxton Doak and Stone Rubeck with one assist each.
Doak and Maddux Hintz had six shots each during the game, while Kuball took four shots and Izyk Arellano took three shots. There were also single shots from Axel Mackinnon, Rubeck and Dominick Littlefield. Goalkeeper Eddie Zarate had one save during the game.
"They played very well," commented Head Coach Josh Webb. "We possessed a lot of the time during the game and I was very proud of them. Defensively, Powell was very organized and it made it tough on us."
On Saturday, the Wolves played another conference game against the Cody Broncs. During the first half of the game, Cody made three goals while Green River was unable to find the net. The Wolves fought off Cody for the rest of the game but were still unable to put the ball in the net. Green River lost the game with a final score of 0-3.
Goalkeeper Zarate had nine outstanding saves during the game, along with multiple shots taken by Doak, Hintz, Arellano, Morris, Littlefield and Kaiden Dodson.
"It was some of the worst transition we have had all year," explained Coach Webb when asked about the loss to Cody. "Cody scored on us within two minutes and 49 seconds."
He feels the boys played much better in the second half of the game and they were more relaxed. He also thought they started slow from the bus ride because they hadn't traveled that far in quit a while, and Cody really came after them from the very beginning of the game.
Going into the State tournament in second place for the 3A West might have worked out better for Green River. They will have a chance to get away from Cody, Worland and Lander and play a different team. Webb is hoping they make it past the first round but said "it's totally up to the boys. We give them all the tools they need, now they need to relax, keep their heads up and play as a team and defend as a team."
Coach Webb is really looking forward to seeing how they can compete at State.
In the days leading up to the Championships, the boys have been working hard at practice. They are working transition, defending and runs inside the box.
The 3A State Championship Tournament will start today in Green River and continues through Saturday.
The Wolves' first game is against the Buffalo Bison at 4 p.m at the Green River High School. If they lose their first game, they will play again on Friday at 11 a.m. at Lincoln Middle School. If they win their first game, they will play on Friday at 4 p.m. at Lincoln Middle School.
