Track and Field teams pick up State qualifiers, P.R.s at Regionals

The Green River High School Boys and Girls Track and Field teams competed in the  4A West Regional Tournament this past week at Rock Springs High School, with decent weather for the first time since earlier in the season. Teams in the 4A West include Kelly Walsh, Star Valley, Cody, Evanston, Rock Springs, Jackson, Riverton and Green River. For both the girls and boys teams, Green River finished in sixth place in the overall team results.

While Green River had a number of competitors pre-qualify for State during the regular season, they also picked up a few more qualifiers at Regionals. They also saw a lot of personal records for the season as a result of their improved performance during the Regional meet.

Those who qualified for State for the girls included Junior Izzy Murdock in the 800 Meter Run, Freshman Nicole Wilson in the 300 Meter Hurdles and the High Jump, and the 4X400 Meter Relay Team of Wilson, Izzy Murdock, Junior Eva Murray, and Senior Madison Murdock. In the throwing events, Sophomore Sophia Arnold and Junior Lillian Allison will both be going to State in the Discus and Shot Put, with Allison taking first in the Discus and second in the Shot Put at the Regional meet.

For the boys, Senior Chris Wilson qualified in four events while winning the 300 Meter Hurdles and the Long Jump and taking third in the 110 Hurdles and Triple Jump. The other two State qualifiers for the boys were Junior Pole Vaulters Keegan Gailey and Trace Erdman.

Coach Hansen commented that "the kids really did step up this weekend at Regionals with lots of P.R.'s and we knew there were several that were going to be right on the edge of qualifying for State and that's how it turned out."

Hansen went on to state that a lot of other teams improved as well, and Green River is looking forward to next year because they do have quite a few underclassmen this year.

"We are excited for the ten that qualified for the State Track Meet, one being an alternate for the 4X4 Relay. We are looking at bringing home some individual hardware," Coach Hansen concluded.

State Track will be this Thursday through Saturday, May 16-18, at Kelly Walsh High School's Harry Gelden Stadium in Casper.
