Green River Wolves Softball loses to Worland and Cody

The Green River Wolves Softball team traveled to play a doubleheader against the Worland Warriors on Friday.

The first game of the day was the conference game. The Wolves had the lead in the first inning, scoring three runs to the Warriors's two. In the third inning, Worland pulled ahead, scoring three runs. In the fifth inning, the Wolves tied up the game but were unable to keep the lead when Worland scored two more runs. In the sixth inning, Worland kept the lead, scoring five more runs. The Wolves lost the game with a final score of 7-12.

Leading the team were Izzy Kelley, Chacee Shiner and Gina Barajas with two runs each and Kodi Allred with one run. Cassie Kelley was a pinch runner for one run in place of Barajas. The Wolves had 10 hits during the game and stole five bases. Barajas went three-for-four at the plate, leading the Wolves in hits. Haidyn Terry pitched six innings, giving up 12 runs on 13 hits, striking out two and walking six players.

"We didn't field the ball well, we didn't hit the ball well, there's just a lot of things that didn't go right," said Head Coach Blair McEndaffer. "It was just not our day."

During the second game, Green River's bats came alive in the second inning. The Wolves scored seven runs in the second inning and six in the third inning. Green River scored seven more runs in the fifth inning, winning the game with a final score of 20-7.

Leading the team was Imagin Wilde with three runs. Kelley, Barajas, Shiner, Allred, Terry, Terryn Avery, Danielle Maag and Emma Riech scored two runs each. The Wolves had 14 hits and stole nine bases during the game. Terry pitched five innings, giving up nine hits and seven runs, striking out three and walking two players.

On Saturday, the Wolves played another doubleheader against the Cody Fillies. Cody dominated the first game while Green River was unable to score. Green River lost the conference game with a final score of 0-18.

During the second game, Cody started the game with eight runs in the first inning. Green River fought to come back but was unable to make up the difference. The Wolves lost the game with a final score of 5-14.

"We just couldn't hit the ball," explained Coach McEndaffer. "For some reason that pitcher gets in their heads because she throws harder than anybody in the conference. But what they don't realize is, the harder the throw, the further the ball goes with a lot less effort."

Leading the team were Shiner, Allred, Terry, Avery and Maag with one run each.

Green River had 10 hits during the game with Allred leading the Wolves with three-for-three at the plate. Avery pitched most of the game, giving up six runs on six hits, striking out two and walking six players.

"It's just one of those weekends that the team struggled and it happens. We just have to pick ourselves back up and get ready for State," she added.

Green River is still waiting to see if they will be competing in the State Championships that take place May 16-18 in Gillette. If Kelly Walsh wins both of their upcoming games, they will be competing at State and Green River will be out. If Kelly Walsh loses one game, Green River will be heading to the State Championships.
