Girls Soccer beats Pinedale, prepares for last games

With another decisive victory under their belt, the Lady Wolves are now looking forward to the last two games of the conference season and what those games could mean for their position in the State tournament.

The Green River High School Girls Soccer team headed to Pinedale last Friday to take on the Lady Wranglers. After having beaten Pinedale at the start of the season, the Lady Wolves came away with an even greater victory this time, winning 11-0.

Even with such a strong score, it was still a well-played game.

"Credit to Pinedale, their goalie played amazing, actually, and made a lot of really great saves early in the game," Green River Heach Coach Matthew Robles explained. "It took us probably about 10, 15 minutes to really break them down and start scoring goals. They did really well. They made life difficult."

Still, Robles noted, having players like Isabel Vasco, Brynlee Cordova and Claira Kuball in the midfield makes it much easier for Green River to control their games. As the defense stayed focused and held strong, the offense kept finding more openings and taking more shots. Robles noted that the Lady Wolves probably took close to 30 shots, with about half coming from Vasco and the other half spread among other team members. Between the team's formation and her own skill, Vasco tends to both find openings and manage to take advantage of them. Once again, she scored almost all of the team's points, making 10 out of the 11 goals. The other point in the game came from Jazy Hunt.

Overall, the whole team played together well, and Robles pointed out that they had sections of the game where they would have a dozen passes without Pinedale ever touching the ball.

"We were able to get back to what we've been preaching, and that's finding possession and moving the ball quickly," he said.

After such a strong game, the Lady Wolves are looking forward to their last two games before State, and preparing for more intense competition. They will be facing the two teams directly above them in their conference as they take on the number three seed, Powell, and the number two seed, Cody.

"There's a lot riding on both games for us," Coach Robles said. "Our state tournament basically starts this week. We're playing state-caliber teams from here on out."

While Green River has already beaten Powell twice this season, Robles pointed out to his players that it's hard to beat the same team three times in the same season. They'll also be playing on Powell's home turf and their Senior Night, which adds extra difficulty to the competition.

"I expect that to be a really tightly contested game," Robles said of taking on Powell.

After playing Powell, the Lady Wolves will face Cody, which is a team they haven't beaten yet this season. However, Cody has lost to both Powell and Lander - two teams that Green River has beaten.

When it comes down to it, the top four teams in the 3A West Conference are almost even in terms of their points and ranking. Beating Powell would mean the Lady Wolves would take the three seed spot. Beating Cody would push them up to be the number two seed. And there's a chance they could actually come away as the number one seed if they win both their games and Lander loses one of their upcoming games.

"The 3A West is wide open for the top four seeds right now," Robles explained. "It all just depends on how each team plays."

While the upcoming games will put extra pressure on the Lady Wolves to push ahead into a better position for the State Championship, the coach believes the team is going in both with confidence and with the understanding that they'll have to play their best soccer to get those wins.

"It's gonna be high intensity, it's going to be a pressure situation for us, but I think that my girls  can step up and do what they need to do to help get us where we want to be," Robles said.
